  • Hi there, long time lurker here etc etc. I’m trying to change oil and filters on my bike but can’t get the oil filter off. Is there a golden technique regarding removing oil filter? Mine is pretty tight and I can’t get it off with my bare hands.

  • is the filter easily accessible and have you tried the universal filter tools.

  • Can you whack a screwdriver through it? Google remove oil filter with screwdriver for a collection of ham fisted mechs demonstrating this destructive technique. You don’t need loads of space for this approach.

  • Strap wrench? Relatively cheap (if you already own a socket set) and can usually be threaded into place in a confined space.

  • Can you whack a screwdriver through it?

Don't do this until absolutely every other avenue is exhausted.

I feel for you tho. The previous owner of my bike did the filter up too tight and it was an absolute sod to remove.

A good first tool-less option is to get a pair of gloves then reverse wrap a load of masking tape around the filter tightly and grab hold and turn hard with two hands.

  • What bike?

As hugo7 has said screwdriver is a final way. Issue can be that the filter can still tear and and you are left with a bit of the filter attached.

  • I was having trouble with my car oil filter earlier this year and used a leather belt, it worked really well.
