I used to own an 8 speed Condor Italia, which I conquered the French Alpine passes back in 2007.. huge regret selling that..

I'm thinking of picking up a Super Aciaio in the near future - can someone weight in on what they're like/how they ride? I've not found an enormous amount written about them outside of the usual review channels.
Mainly interested in:
1) handling characteristic - i'm not after anything that handles super aggressively/twitchy. More interested in something a bit smoother.
2) riding characteristic - does it feel heavy/stiff/comfortable?

@miloas I’ve owned a rim brake Super Acciaio since 2017, so I can give my impressions of it.

1. Handling - it’s a UCI-approved race frame so it’s designed to be responsive. Short chainstays and a short wheelbase overall. I wouldn’t describe the Super Acciaio as twitchy however. I’ve got no handling issues to speak of after 5 years of consistent riding.
   
2. Riding - super comfortable and lively. Gets up to speed just fine. Obviously heavier than aluminium/titanium/carbon frames but I personally don’t have an issue with that.
   
   

All in all, I love it and would choose it over any other bike. I saved up for a high-end carbon frame and then really didn’t get on with it. Horrible plasticky clattering along the road and it felt uncomfortably rigid and characterless.

I’ve gone back to my Super Acciaio because I love it. So much that I’ve ordered a fully custom disc brake version of it from Condor.

Also own a rim brake Super Acciaio, bought from condor Jan last year and used through all the seasons.
Extremely comfortable and very responsive imo, I thought I remember reading that the head tube was a little higher & therefore more comfortable & easier to spend more time in the drops but couldn’t see anything on the website.
With a 100mm stem handling seems perfectly normal/ sensible and nothing twitchy going on.

Got a Super Acciaio in 2018 and been riding it loads since then and love it … but sometimes I yearn for more comfort (it’s pretty stiff?) and more tire clearance (25mm Corsas just about fit).

Thanks all for the feedback! If i can get my hands on one i'll take the plunge i think. My current bike has a pretty low front end, so i'm looking forward to opening up my lower back a bit.

Clearance wise - is it tight for tires that measure 25mm? ie. blow up to 25mm, or just 25mm on the label? My bike has clearance for 28mm's, but the tires actually balloon up to 30mm. I'd be keen to get some wide rims/wide tyres on there if possible.

I run 25mm tyres on 17mm internal width rims. Measured width is 26mm or thereabouts.

Officially the Super Acciaio takes 25mm but a friend has used 28mm for a Roubaix trip without any problems.

The clearance is tightest where the chainstays join the BB shell but that may have changed since the 2017 model I have. 28mm measured is a sensible max I reckon.

Edit: just remembered I did have some 19mm rims with 25mm Corsas that measured at 27ish mm. No problems.

I ran 25mm tyres on hunt four seasons wheels, 19mm internal 24mm external rims & the tyres did balloon up to about 28mm and had a “light bulb” 💡 profile which is not great but had no issues with tyres rubbing on the frame.

Like the others said, 28mm measured width is fine (I'm running 25mm Corsas on 21mm internal widths and they come to about that) but clearance on the NDS chain stay is only about 4mm on my 2018 model.

What frame size are you looking for? I'm thinking of letting my 55cm go to make space for something else...

@wwform i'm after a 55cm, which i think roughly translates to a medium/my 54cm bike with a slightly higher head tube. Let me PM you.

I've had my Super Acciaio since late last year. It rides and handles just great on Record/ Ambrosio wheels with Conti Competition tubulars. I have a pair of new Vittoria 28mm tubs not fitted yet but I'm pretty sure they will clear. Build is 2x12 Campag Chorus with a low gear of 32x34, yes you read that right!

It's a costly choice but worth it — keep it for a lifetime!

Spin to win! Would quite like to get an old Fratello for winter, surprisingly few of them about in 61cm on the second hand market, which proves how good they are, no one wants to sell them!
