A record 55 Indian cyclists have completed one of the toughest long distance cycling challenges in the world, London-Edinburgh-London (LEL) 2022 - during a scorching British heatwave.
Gareema Shankar, 43, from Delhi, was the last known rider to complete the route – finishing two and a half days out of time on Monday at 6am. “Even when people told me you are out of race now and even though all the control points were closed, I wanted to carry on and pedal and experience the British countryside. It was the experience of a lifetime,” she said. “I was very happy to finish on Independence Day and people came out with banners to cheer me.” She cycled alone through the night and once had to get treated by a medic. Cycling on the gravel, the heat, saddle sore and nerve pain all slowed her down.
