Had the most fun day I've had since (re)taking up mountain biking.
If anyone fancies a trip in the UK I would heartily recommend Ballater in Scotland loads of maintain trails on marked on trailforks, mastermind and heartbreak ridge being my favourites. An absolutely cracking LBS Cycle Highlands.
Heres a vid of someone else riding heartbreak ridge,
Note these guys got up to the trailhead the sensible way, I rode up a downhill route called pannanich trail which would have been much better on an emtb.

Did someone here service their own forks?
I want to increase the travel on my Pike forks and do a lower leg service while I'm at it.
I was having a look in the manual and need Maxima Plush light oil in the lowers, but.... also 3ml of Maxima Plush heavy on top of the airspring. The smallest amount you can buy is 120ml so this would be a enormous waste since I'll never use it anymore anyways....
Maybe I can mix a small amount light oil with Sram butter? Would this be a stupid idea? -

From Heidelberg it isn't far to Odenwald trails. Beerfelden bike park for example. Deffo would go for a trail bike there. Might not be enough for the bike park though

Not an expert here because now live in Australia, but grew up in Michelstadt. Saw quite a few trails in the woods east of town on my visit a few weeks ago, probably at blue level from what I could tell. Loads of forestry roads and smaller gravel trails everywhere also, some pinchy climbs up to the ridge if you fancy it, so it'd be a good chance to string together a decent size loop that has a few technical trails in it, i.e. https://www.strava.com/segments/23258204
Looking on Trailforks there seems to be quite a few blue ones around Zwingenberg/Bensheim as well, probably all off the Melibokus?
EDIT: Komoot seems to have a few routes for Michelstadt: https://www.komoot.com/guide/4744/mtb-trails-around-michelstadt
EDIT 2: If you can hack the idiosyncratic site design and German language, this looks like a great resource: https://www.mtb-geo-naturpark.de/

melibokus has very different levels, ranging from light to harsh.
there is a nice one when coming from the platform with the tower in the direction of the street.
on the left side, going along the "ridge". more natural "flowtrail", nothing scary.
but pay attention, there were some traps with nails or fishing line. locals tend to repair those quickly, just keep it in mind. -

Amazing. Cheers @pascalo and @deerheart. Reckon Melikobus could be great shout as a bit easier to get to than Michelstadt without a car. Will investigate đ

You only need it for bushing and seal lubrication, so just use light for both. The heavy on the top of airspring will migrate to the lowers eventually anyway (presumably they suggest heavy so it stays a bit longer)
Ive used fully synthetic engine oil in mine before, it's loads cheaper and does exactly the same job. More recently I'm using Silkolene RSF instead which is equally cheap and available from most motorbike shops -

That's what I was thinking too, thanks!
I ordered 120ml of Maxima light now, should be enough for 6 lower leg services, but motorcycle fork oil is a good tip. -

Is the bird still in warranty?
-
• #24688
Warranty is transferable.
Bird Warranty
All Bird bikes come with a lifetime frame warranty against manufacturing defects.
All Bird frames have a 2 year transferrable warranty against manufacturing defect*. This means that you can sell the bike within 2 years knowing that the warranty will pass to the second owner, boosting resale value for you and safeguarding your buyer against any problems in the future. If you want to transfer your warranty to a new owner, please either call or email us. It is your responsibility to transfer (or make sure the previous owner transfers) the warranty.
Warranties will only be honoured where we have record of the transfer occurring. Only a single warranty transfer is allowed and must be recorded within 2 years of the shipment date for your order, no âlateâ requests will be accepted.
- Transfers are only allowed to a person residing within the current sales territories allowed by Bird at the time of transfer. Please contact us for a current list. Transfers to and from businesses are not allowed.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All aluminium frames will accumulate fatigue over its lifetime and this will vary the depending on the alloy, frame type and amount of use the frame is subject to. Use in competitive events, jumping, riding with heavy loads, commercial activities and other types of non standard use can dramatically shorten the useful life of the frame and we reserve the right to take this into consideration when assessing a warranty claim.
In the event that the failure of the frame is not covered by warranty, we will offer you a discounted replacement frame.
This warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of a defective frame and the owner will be responsible for any postage costs, labour and the cost of any additional components required.
2 YEAR TRANSFERRABLE PAINT WARRANTY
The paint and graphics on your Bird bike are provided with a 2 year transferrable warranty against manufacturing defects. Why not longer? Well the reality is we know youâll love your Bird bike, and will ride it a lot. Riding unfortunately damages the paintwork⌠thatâs a fact. Once damaged it becomes difficult to figure out whatâs warranty and whatâs not, so we have to limit it to two years, sorry. If you want to keep your bike looking lovely for longer then we recommend a frame tape kit should be applied.
- Transfers are only allowed to a person residing within the current sales territories allowed by Bird at the time of transfer. Please contact us for a current list. Transfers to and from businesses are not allowed.

Seems like mine is competitively priced given itâs the carbon version.

I think there's a train line from Eberbach if not Heidelberg.

Lower leg service is easy to do. It won't really matter what weight oil you put on the top, and I'd be surprised when you open it up if there is actually some oil in there and not just a ton of grease.

Any recommendations for an xc tyre that has decent sidewall protection? I keep slicing open my S-works Fast Trak's.

• #24695
I had the same issue and swapped to Fast Trak with grid casing

No thunderstorms for you yet then? Chucked it down in the Isere this morning....
-
• #24698
Rained mid-day but very lightly, thunderstorm risk was âmoyenâ according to the board outside the lift.
Bit of a crap-shoot this whole week really, and tbh a really good drench would do the trails some good.

Yeah, last week was super hot here. Too hot for much riding tbh. Next week does look a bit hit and miss, but it could all change before then given the variability of Alpine weather
