  • Have to do some painting from a flat roof (covered in that grey bitumen stuff like lino). Do I need to put down some boards for the ladders to sit on?

I was looking at those, although admittedly you’d still need some kind of bike mount I’m sure you could find something appropriate to mount to the two holes, and certainly better than a meat hook.

  • I would.
In the past I've managed to make several holes in roofing felt using a step ladder - it can be repaired, but if there are boards to hand I wouldn't risk making the extra work...

  • Had a think, maybe get someone in to paint the new rendering and the bits of wood under the guttering. Got up there to look and it's higher than I imagined!

  • I used Sandtex Masonry paint. I watered it down by about 20% as the sprayer clogged multiple times. The deep pile rollers didn't give a consistent finish and would have taken triple the time. I'm still not convinced it will age well but we're really happy with the finish for the time being.

  • 'Fascia boards' is the term for the wood under the guttering.

  • Thanks, had a mental block, all I could think of were soffits :)

  • Goddamn bit stuck in my SDS Chuck. I struggled to get it in/ out a couple of times, went back in to finish the job, now it's not budging. What to do?

Other bits work fine btw, the shank looked ever so slightly different on this one.

UPDATE: got the bastard thing out with liberal penetrating oil and levering in tween bit and chuck with 2 adjustable spanners. At least I have a good excuse to return it after use now.

  • First one done, followed your method and all seems fine 🤞🏻
Tomorrow part 2: with a really complicated 5 pendant glass one. That should be fun (and include lots of swearing)

  • It looks good. Good luck tomorrow.

  • Helpful forum folk, does anyone know what this type of gate post cut on the top is called?

  • Anyone know much about LED strips? I've got a dimmable strip (which i assume means it needs constant voltage). Can i wire it up to a driver with less wattage output than it needs at its top rating - so i have a permanently dimmed strip\?

  • I'm no expert in LED strips but a few I've worked with have been ok like this.

  • nice - i've just wired up two strips. total wattage of 90w to a 60w driver. looks a bit dimmer and still works.

  • PSA:
Don’t take the membrane out of the cistern filling valve and have it fall apart in your hands at 5:45pm. do it in the morning and check which retailers stock the part before attempting to clean it.

  • Ha! I was just trying to stop our cistern dribbling this morning, had lid off, tools at the ready and then thought I’m driving to Kerry this afternoon, just leave it be for a few weeks

  • I'd add to this, don't solder pipes that still have a very weak flow of water in (due to buggered stopcock) underneath a cistern, because they crack. Doing this the day before you start a new job (and soldering so you can have a shower before you head in) is also sub-optimal.

  • I'm after a tape measure recommendation after my OH broke our inherited house one from Woolworths.

    Wish list

    • reasonable accuracy
    • body size ~5x5cm and not too thick (ie something compact but not small)
    • as long as possible given the body size.
    • inches and cm
    • inexpensive

I have a Hultafors Talmeter, but it stays firmly out of reach of the rest of the family. I'm just after something simple to leave in the house toolbox.

    Cheers

  • inches and cm

    Joker

  • Looks perfect.

I can already picture the pattina my son will put on that.

  • inches

I find them useful for measuring the progress of Brexit objectives.

  • Stanley 5m because how often do you need to measure 8m at home, for £7 (or less)

  • Doesn't everyone use feet, inches and millimetres for measuring?

I just tend to pick up Stanley ones cheap. I'd get the 5m, the smaller one is a bit easy to bend.
