If it’s not a rust heap I’d go for the Alfa all day long. Far more special than even the nicest MGB.

@BRM your dilemma is interesting. Have you ever had the chance to drive the Alfa? Or a similar one? It may not live up to expectations. That and it could be a can of worms that once you start digging the whole thing is on a rotisserie... This is moot if the Alfa is purely an object of lust and driving it is not a concern.

In my view, if I'd put so much effort into the B I wouldn't sell. And I bet it will drive well when the opportunity arises.

On one hand, I can't see where I would find the time to race it (two young kids and a busy job are limiting), plus I'd need to stump up for the licence, a tow car and a trailer.

If you're going to race it, and race it reasonably soon, keep the B. If you're not going to race it, or if it's a case of 'I'll race it when the kids have left home/I've retired/Hell freezes over' then do the swap.

So there's a high chance I'll be driving either an Aston Martin or McLaren from London to Monaco in February. Very excited by this. Does depend on various things like insurance, etc... And it won't be a high speed drive, but it will be fun.

And I'm not really a car person, but both are apparently rare versions of their respective brands.

I have spent a bit of time driving a gt junior. On the road and track. I'm going to try this one before buying!

I went to look at one today in mortlake and I fit. Just. The right knee/wheel/knob interface is toit! My hair hits the roof lining too.

The biggest -ve is living with myself not driving it after years and £££ of input. The Alfa is obvs a glorious car.

The Aston is something like the last designed by a certain designer I should care about. About 2 decades old?

My advice, try and be level headed, which car will be worth more. You have put alot of time and money in to the B, is the alfa a car you will give to the kids or just an investment? Trying to be objective, as I know I'm not.

I think the plan is to take all 3 of his cars, he's driving the McLaren so I'll get the Aston Martin and someone else will likely get the Porsche (the black one - nothing to write home about, just a brand new top of the range Cayenne Turbo GT). But we'll probably all go on the insurance for all three so we'll all get a try of each.

I'm not really looking forward to the McLaren though. I've seen videos of them on track days and it's 1,000BHP (so I was told) and the number of times his brother flicked it off the track on a corner is too many for comfort.

I think the "what car" question is easy to answer - do you own a pair of red trousers? If not, are you happy to purchase (or, I suppose, hire) a pair for the trip?

Need to start thinking about a roofbox that will fit a pushchair. Just want a narrow box as am using Thule WingBar with a bike mount. Any tips?
