  • Anyone have experience with the newer cheapie Shimano BB, the un300?

I just ordered one from CRC and you can feel it click faintly all the way around as you manipulate the spindle... like a mild version of the volume knob on a 70s hifi.

Should I return it, or are they all like that...?

Dunno about UN300, but Shimano hub bearings are routinely notchy off the bike when new. Like the hubs, the BB is an assembly of cheap bearings assembled at the factory with all the preload, so it's not surprising. I'm guessing you won't notice it when assembled and it will smooth out a bit when broken in.

  • There was a guy on Retrobike who seemed to have repeated issues and premature failures. I couldn't quite tell if it was his installation technique causing it though.

  • Used a few, none were notchy before installation.

Had one that expired very quickly though; common experience says they’re worse than UN-55.

I’ve started using Token square taper BBs instead; they feel much better made, with a CNC spindle and crabon sleeve. Not had one go crunchy yet. £30 direct from Taiwan.
