  • Anyone care to chime in.

Rancilio silvia, Eureka mignion Same coffee, same dose (14g p.f.) but something suddenly going wrong. It's not coming out super fast either. But I'm getting bitter and watery espresso now. No crema. Puck like this. I'm confused.
I am living at 1000m and it's warm. But I had good coffee here before it went bad.

  • Looks like lots of channelling there. Watery and bitterness would back that up as it's not extracting evenly. Check the shower screen is flowing evenly. It could well be blocked up with coffee residue and limescale causing it to spray, so it might be worth taking it off, giving it a good scrub, descale and soak in Fizer to remove the built-up coffee residue. Hold it up to the light and check all the holes are nice and clear. Do the same with the basket. Again, if it's blocked it'll force the water through a not ideal route for even extraction.

And of course, randomly, it could just be the weather.

  • Why the low weight?

  • I believe the poerafiler is 14g. Happy donkey bottomless

  • Thanks will try those

  • Cleaned everything and didn't help. So o turned the grinder very fine, too fine, and then worked back to a good setting.
I'm not sure what happened but it seems the grind went way off. It also seems the timer doser on the Eureka has become worthless, so I will need to use scales every time.

Nice to drink a nice espresso again.

  • Yeah, I’ve never depended on the timer on my Silenzio, always use a scale.

  • Weirdly it's always been good enough to give me pretty good coffee all the time.

  • I based my decision on reviews and other opinions : )

  • Any interest in an unused Rave coffee coldbrew gift box? Comes with a Hario coldbrewer, 250g Rave coffee, brew guide and cotton storage bag. It’s £30 on the Rave website - how does £25 posted sound? Would love to keep it but don’t really have space for a 5th bit of coffee brewing equipment.

  • Anyone tried this...

  • Yeah I got a carton a while ago out of curiosity. I should say that I don't do espresso so I didn't try steaming it, but it split in absolutely every coffee or tea I tried and made them undrinkable. Didn't taste too bad to me on cereal, but was unsurprisingly earthy so my wife poured it down the sink after she got sick of me trying to use it up because she found it disgusting.

  • Yeah not overly convinced myself.

  • Just got a Moccamaster; anyone know how much coffee should I be using per 500ml?

  • 30g then adjust to personal preference

  • I always use 60g per litre as JB says, but adjust the grind depending on the beans and the volume being brewed. Pretty much always brew either 330ml or 500ml (a waste, I know) so keep the grind quite fine. 20g and 30g of beans respectively.

  • Well, I've been looking for a retirement pastime.

Which UK Freeport is closest to a reliable source of gritstone?

I'll also be marketing the slabs of stone with the many cut outs as garden features.

  • Awesome, I haven’t seen a worse grind consistency since my first Braun blade unit busted in mid process.

  • Oh yeah that's my kind of engineering. Just fuckin eyeball it and if in doubt, epoxy.

  • I suspect the main market would be as gifts from clueless benefactors to disbelieving coffee afficionadoes, with a smattering of 'full experience' coffee shops where the time rich punter is invited 'to even grind your own choice of beans'.

  • I enjoyed the QA process for selecting the original lump of rock.

  • Looking at the Sage dual boiler, the goal is to have a user friendly dual boiler machine, mainly so other people aren't put off making me a coffee haha. Any other suggestions or reasons to avoid Sage?

  • I think dual boilers are overrated at that price range. For a little more I'd get an e61 HX machine like an ecm or rocket.

  • Profitec 500 has piqued my interest!

  • Yeah, that looks great. Solid machine, not plasticy like tbe sage.
