I’ve wondered the exact same thing, so went and bought the H&H Alu rack to give it a try. Half the price of the official Brompton one. May occasionally be used to balance a parcel that wont fit in the front bag. Will report back once fitted, supposed to be delivered today!
Yes extra wheels needed, I’ve gone for the same Joseph Kousac ones I have already

Update on H&H rack, not the easiest fitting (my fault for having a non standard Brompton) but it certainly makes it roll so much better. Still a little wobbly and may yet get one of the wheel extender things to help stability but a quick test across tiled supermarket floor it’s a vast improvement.
Speaking of wheeling around, is it worth getting a rear rack to make it easier to roll around (I can't imagine it will ever get used as a rear rack)?
If so, what is the favoured one (that won't break the bank) and do you need extra wheels too (and if so what)? Cheers
