It looks like I have another dead 3080 on my hands - POST consistently fails, with a VGA not detected error.
Other than re-seating the graphics card (which I have done), what else can I try?
I don't have any other machines that I can try the card in.

Onboard graphics? Update the motherboard bios.

Borrow or buy another card (the cheapest you can find) to rule out motherboard issues

Does anyone have a spare 16gb DDR4 3200 laptop ram stick kicking about?
I currently have 1x8 and would like to increase it.
(Postage to Essex would be required)

You'd be better off getting hold of another 8GB module (of the same type as your existing one), or 2x16GB, to enable dual-channel mode, which will noticeably increase performance, especially for graphics tasks.

Since this exchange, a new SP3 EPYC heatsink contender has appeared: the Arctic Cooling SP3.
It's hench; much bigger than any other SP3 cooler, allowing the use of 120mm fans. It comes with integrated 120mm fans, which are dogshit (two of the four units I bought had faulty fans), so I replaced them with Noctua Industrial 3000rpm.
As you can see, the heatsink has the orthodox orientation for the SP3 EPYC socket. Temperatures are a full 15degC lower than with the previous best Noctua cooler.

air inside the case can't heat up if there's no room for air in the case.

It’s a 4U rack mount chassis, so quite pokey inside compared to a modern tower.

I ordered a cheap graphics card for a client today and had this as a response.
We're writing to let you know that unfortunately your order has been delayed due to a shortage in stock of the following item(s):
LN67990 NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 310 1GB PCIe DUAL DP Graphics Card 1GB HP OEM
After further investigation alongside our warehouse team, they have managed to locate the item which has been on display in our open box area. We have had our technician to have a look over it and it's in very good condition also comes with a full warranty.
If you would like to go ahead with this please reply to advise how you would like to proceed at your earliest convenience.
Are Scan a bit of a shoddy company or have we just been unlucky?

Sounds pretty honest about what has happened?

no discount though

Scan aren't terrible, quite trustworthy... but they're big business and make their money selling to businesses rather than individuals and their service reflects that... you're likely small fry and don't warrant any attention and whomever you speak to has no authority to improve your experience. But they do sell legit things, so it largely means it's worth tolerating if they have what you want.

Just be direct and ask them for a discount on it. they wouldn't sell it as new if it's ex-display so tell them you want the ex-display price.

I feel like this has happened before here to someone? Given that the GPU drought seems to be largely over I don't think asking for a discount would be cheeky either.

Scan are mostly excellent (especially if you have a business account manager with them) and their product range is unparalleled, but they can occasionally be a shower of cunts.
I had a similar issue at the height of the GPU crisis; ordered 6x RTX A5000 GPUs at £2.2K each, and they arrived unboxed, in tatty anti-static bags, rattling around loose in a big cardboard box, with tiny capacitors floating around having been knocked off.
Their excuse was that they’d taken stock from their OEM PC building department instead of the normal stock, and despite all the capacitors that had fallen off, they ‘should still be OK’, and were pressuring me to just open them up and try.
Had to wrestle with them to send replacements, which they eventually did, and still haven’t collected the damaged ones a year later...

Wow, that is unbelievably bad!

I bought an 18TB external hard drive in January to use as a backup device... but I'm already 98% full 😢
Can't believe my data is growing that fast, but it is... so now I need to buy an even bigger one, or a NAS to backup the other NAS.
Already have one of these, probably need another https://www.westerndigital.com/en-gb/products/external-drives/sandisk-professional-g-drive-usb-3-1-hdd#SDPH91G-018T-MBAAD

I've just taken the view that the majority of my stuff (music, tv, films, emulators, etc) isn't important enough to back up. I have a batch file that runs every week that lists all the files so I know what I've lost and 1TB of cloud backup for stuff that I don't want to lose.

On an entirely different note, would using a USB to s/pdif converter plugged into a speaker introduce a notable lag?
Still haven't really worked out what to do about a speaker in my desk setup and thinking of a small soundbar. Don't want it if it will introduce sync issues though.
I'll set mespilus jr. the task of checking prices for B&W laser printers.
Did notice some Oki on boxshifters' websites.
New name to me. Are they adequate/any good?
