  • Just been approved for a second plot. Yay.

I think it’s on the basis that the plot is so fucked up and over grown. Council will go in and strim everything down to the ground. Plan is to make a rough plan of where each bed is going, cardboard over the top of everything. Wood chip the paths and then no dig the beds. It will probably take months and months to get this in any decent shape but he goes nothing.

  • I was clearing weeds & sorting hedges today, wish my bosch batteries could power the pompino too. Dug up some spuds & found some runner beans had formed too.

    Sounds a good plan enjoy!

  • Cheers. Will try not to get excited and buy loads of stuff I won’t use.

  • Anyone know what’s going on with my tomatoes? Three varieties, they’re all like this. 1-2 fruit per truss and everything else dead. Current theories:
I moved them at the wrong time.
Pollination (didn’t think that was an issue with tomatoes)
The fermented plant juice I made was too strong and has messed the plant up.

  • Interestingly mine are similar this year. I’ve grown some new varieties this year so was putting it down to that.
They can actually do this when they don’t get enough light but that can’t be the case this year!!

  • Same here. It’s like they didn’t get pollinates and the flower just died.

Is it carrot harvest time yet?

  • Depends when you sowed them :) Pull one and see

  • Had a look they seem fairly small. I really should note down when I plant stuff

  • Is it too late to plant main crop potatoes?

  • ^ think some folks plant late for Xmas harvest?

    Made fruit 'cage' bigger today.

  • You can plant potatoes in August. Main crop take about 20 weeks to harvest so they could be susceptible to frost and also on the other end of the weather scale blight. Growing them in a greenhouse in a big pot is usually how people get Christmas spuds.

  • Also if you’ve got first earlies I’d chuck them in instead. 10-12 weeks till harvest for these so more likely to get a crop before the ground gets super wet and rots them.

  • I’ll try either or both of those method. Only issue is that green house is full of chillis, aubergines, tomatoes and a melon. So I can start then in pots at home then transfer to greenhouse when the weather gets a bit cooler. Would that work?

  • Lots of bargain seeds in my local Tesco, think they've switched over the seasonal lines so this might apply elsewhere

  • Yeah that would work for sure.
    Nice to have a melon!

  • The melon isn’t really doing a lot at present. Plenty of leaves and flowers but no fruit yet

  • In other news I start to put cardboard down on the new plot. It feels bigger than our current plot, even though it’s full of crap. In fact it’s a mess. The person before basically screwed four pallets together and filled them with compost. Some are full and some not.

So one from the council is coming to strim any weeds etc etc and then I’ll have a better idea of what’s there. Definitely a grape vine which is very established. A pear tree and some other small trees that could be cherry, but no fruit to help identify them.

  • Got up the plot yesterday for the first time after a trip away and threw a bit of water about. Everything looked ok although some of the potatoes in tubs were a bit wilted. Squash look to be having their best year. Should get about 10 squash, I reckon. Annoyingly I can’t get everything to have a good year at the same time. There’s always next year, although I’ve had the plot inspection while I was away and I’ve not heard anything yet. :/

  • What’s the score with figs? I think this is ripe, can I just eat it or do I need to peel it

  • Just eat them I think.

  • I went up to ours this morning and it seems we will soon be taking orders from the squash plants. such a contrast to last year, I don't really know what to do!

  • Probably could do with longer on the plant, but too late now. It's always a fine balance between leaving them on long enough to ripen whilst running the risk of the woodlice and ants tucking in first.

You eat all of it, bar the woody bit where it was attached to the tree.
