  • My beard grows to 10-5mm, I want to shave it back. My old hair clippers that I previously used have just died.

Hair clippers are crap for shaving, electric shavers can’t do beards.

What do? Is there an obvious thing that solves this and isn’t v expensive?

  • Beard trimmer.

But the two in sequence can do the job. Mow it down to a No.0 crop with the clippers, then smooth it down with an electric shaver if that's the look you're going for.

  • A straight razor or shavette will let you shave it so long as you keep rinsing it off.

Although personally I'd use a beard trimmer to take the big stuff off and then a safety razor.

  • I don’t shave completely down to the skin, but this handles my requirements. Comes with attachments starting at 1/16” and going up from there.

  • Box of matches. Smells horrible, but very effective. OTOH, beard trimmers are cheap and don't produce such nauseating odours.

  • As a balding oldman™, I have been cutting my own hair (and beard) for years. I used to have separate hair and beard clippers. But now have just one set. Key thing for me is getting clippers with a Li-ion battery as they charge faster and last longer than the other cordless (at least in the sample set of 6 or 7 I've had over the years). It won't shave you, but will get close enough that you can then shave with whatever you want, and will do it a fair few times before needing a recharge.
