  • The ones I’ve had so far haven’t had any issues.

But why though, surely the slug would just crawl in there and have at it.

  • What's your method for the tubs?

I bought loads of cheap MP compost (Levington's Essentials ) which was crap but I roughly mixed it with composted horse/farm manure (Wickes) plus a handful of 6X chicken fertilizer .
Chitted tubers on a 6" base of this then cover and earth up as the halms grow.
I never let the tubs dry out so possibly too moist for ants ?

  • Wow, looks like a fantastic crop. Well done.

  • Interesting to read. Thanks for that. I’m definitely going to refine my methods based on this year’s trial.

  • Up the plot before work this morning to try and tidy up a bit more. Squash are coming on really well. Sweetcorn looking a bit sorry for themselves, tbh. It’s a new variety I’ve not tried before (Elan F1) I think I might go back to the ‘special Swiss’ variety that’s done me well the past couple of years.

  • There is a bit of a trial going on with these 8 tubs - 4 had Vitax Potato fertilizer mixed in and the other 4 had blood ,fish & bone mixed in but I doubt I'll see any significant difference.

  • Nice. I like that kind of approach. I certainly learn a lot more from my failures than I do from my successes.

  • Things finally kicking off a bit on our plot. Corn looking good, lots of fruit setting on the various squash plants.

Spent a day on structural maintenance fuelled by fresh peas off the plant :)

  • jealous - all my toms are green right now

  • Weirdly those heritage cherries have ripened way faster than any of the other varieties, and they only go orange. V tasty

  • Is it time to repot my chillis

  • I plant mine around November iirc.

  • Is it time to repot my chillis

Have a look and see if they’ve filled out the pot with roots. Not much point in replanting if there’s still plenty of growing room, and they won’t mind much even then if you keep them fed. They’d probably prefer those blinds open… or put them outside somewhere sunny during the day?

  • My chillis are tiny by comparison. They’ve started to bud but not flower yet.

  • Some of our chillis are just flowering and some are starting to fruit.
Stuck em in the ground about 2months ago after leaving them in tiny pots too long.
They did nothing for ages then all of a sudden went into overdrive.

  • Phew not a terrible situation then.

  • In green house related news. There’s an abandoned plot on our site I was able to rob some glass from. So my green house is 95% complete. There is a sort of diamond shape that broke the other day. So annoyingly that now needs replacing.

Think I I’m going to invest in a glass cutter

  • Got a few tomatoes this eve. Short on time this last 2 weeks so weeds have taken over and I've missed the Blackcurrant harvest.

One of my stuck squash is fruiting, it is smaller than a typical tomato.

  • Is anyone growing water melons? I have one in the green house. Plenty of flowers but no fruit yet

  • I think tiny squash mean they haven't been pollinated
Does it have male and female flowers?

  • Not by design, this will result in a beautifully cradled squash
