It's a thermal detector gun, will likely tell someone whether or not the house is habited even in darkness. Ambient temperature for an occupied house is different than for an unoccupied house.

They could've done it from a distance, but the sensitivity in recent days will be off... the heat from the door frame and building would radiate enough to lower confidence... you'd want to get close to a door / window to increase confidence.
Now is this time for your friend to be extremely paranoid and drop several thousand on credit card to immediately camera every room, put movement activated lights outside, and ramp up house alarms and locks.
