Which Tyres?

  • Sad face: yes.

  • Looking for a 25/28mm general training/riding tyre that is quite hard wearing and puncture proof but doesn't feel like riding on hosepipes. Currently on Open Paves, which are lovely, but are pretty quick wearing

  • Schwalbe Durano
    Michelin Pro4Endurance

  • I used 650x50 M on the back for An Turas Mor and it seemed fine on that gravel. It flatted on the road and I had to plug it but I'd used this tyre quite a bit already.

My missus had a Riddler on the back, which pissed out sealant within 1mi but was then totally fine. I've used Riddlers before and thought they were ok but I'd head towards more durable tyres for the longer events.

For speed, I'd want to look at actual Crr data or roll down tests because "feel" is too subjective.

  • Thanks! Sadly Bicyclerollingresistance doesn't have data for the SG2 version of the Riddler, so the feel is all I have.

According to them Challenge Getaways should be extremely puncture resistance and have ridiculous low rolling resistance, but surely they should be too fragile? Also feel I'd be pushing it at 40mm, instead of 45.

  • I always go big as possible but remember mud-clearance.

What have previous racers used? That should give you an idea of where tyre choice is heading for it.

  • Thanks! I think I have seen Pro4 Endurances on Decathlon for £50 a pair

  • Tyre choice is all over the place for starters, but finishers generally all have 42 or 45mm with medium knobbles.

Teravail Cannonball seems popular, that's a 42mm tire that comes up bizarrely narrow (38 in BRR test), but gets a terrible review from bicyclerollingresistance, despite Jaimi Wilson winning on them, and Angus Young coming in first before being disqualified last year.

Getaways have identical volume and "should be" better in every way (according to numbers)

There's also a bunch of G One variants and Riddlers are relatively prevalent.

  • Challenge Getaways

Those sidewalls "look" quite thin. Presumably that's where they get any measured speed benefits from. Same reason I picked GK SK+ for Badlands - very supple sidewalls 'should' equate to faster rolling but still got the full punc protection for all the rocks.

Teravail seem to do a lot of sponsorship so I'd be wary of those on sponsored rider bikes.

GBDuro has a lot of road so the tighter tread options look like a sensible choice. I'd still opt for something with extra protection because speed benefit or not, no one wants to be pissing about with cuts mid-race

The missus had an older model G-One Ultrabite 2" or something on her front wheel. No issues.

Better riders (better line choice, lighter on the bike) can be faster with shitter tyres so if you're technically a good rider you are likely able to get away with lighter, faster tyres. If you're a fat fuck, that REALLY REALLY hates stopping for flats you'll likely choose more durable.

I've been thinking about GBDuro for a while and for me I'd definitely go bigger than those Getaways but that's for reasons above.

Also, they sound like they're GKs with the super supple sidewalls - that's gonna be a bitch to seat if you do lose the tubeless lock on 'em at any point.

  • Good points. I'm not particularly interested in the Cannonball, so don't worry about that.

I'm totally in agreement on the puncture protection, I'd rather get something with good protection, I tend to flat often. Which is what drove me to the getaways initially, since their puncture protection is the best of any knobbly tire in BRR. Their sidewall indeed seems to be their weak point, but bizarrely still more resistant than Cinturato M, Cannonball Light or Riddler Light.

If they offered Getaways in 45 I'd be on it I think. My bike won't comfortably clear anything larger. Just driving myself insane with comparing everything on the market so i don't have to ride these damn Riddlers.

  • I would've expected Cnturato to be pretty high on the sidewall list. I've certainly not had issues with mine. But tests are tests and I'm just an anecdote. They definitely seem solid/thick, ie. the tyres stand up by themselves compared to the GKs which would just flop into a pile.

I need to have a look at BRR for knobbies. To be honest I've so many spare tyres I don't want to see more info until I've used what I've got :)

Are you going to be racing DBDuro or riding the route as a tour? Can you afford to test a few tyres over a few weeks/months? Ok, you have a month if you're racing.

How much clearance do you have with 45mm? It's been pretty dry but if we get storms before the race, I'd expect more mud and Scotland's always fucking wet no matter

  • I'm going to be racing GBduro, so not loads of time, but not too pressed either. I appreciate your anecdotes as much as anything else though, saves me from having to find out everything myself and spending a fortune on tires.

The cinturato H somehow scores much higher than the M on sidewall protection. Tire manufacturers really do work in mysterious ways.

BRR could be a great resource to pick from your pile of tires it seems. Some Gravelkings score pretty high.

  • What's the puncture test? Stabbing a sharp through the side? Is there any evidence the two tyres use different sidewalls? The Ms definitely seem up there but now I'm curious. If they weren't fitted to a wheel I'd stick the calipers on them.

  • They do a static puncture test with a blunt and a sharp needle. I was mistaken though, the Cinturato M and H and Getaway have identical sidewall protection within a margin of error.

  • That makes a lot more sense to me.

The Getaway could be a good shout then.

  • Anyone used the pirelli p zero race 4 season tyres?

  • Road
    35-40c
    650b
    Tubeless

Usually my Google Fu is good but I am struggling...

  • GK slick in 27.5 x 1.5 at £30 a pop is the frontrunner for now

  • Building a FGMTB/Tracklocross 650b from an old GT, forks will take up to 27.5 x 2.4 rear maybe about 2/2.1. any recs? Nothing too spenny plz.

  • WTB Nano if you can find it

  • What's the skinniest slick tyre you can actually buy that would safely fit a 650B w/ 25mm internal rim width.

    Same question for the 700C Hayfield wheels on a Sequoia, they're 622 x 26

  • I ran 28 Corsas on my hayfields @ 90ish psi for around 1000 miles, they were well used before I did and the treaded band became unattached in the end. Don’t know if that was the stretch or just they were knackered. But they stayed on and up the whole time.

  • That's a very weird wheel and tyre combo but answers my question. Thanks :)

Just wondering about road tyre options for my 650B gravel wheels. I'll probably not bother but it's nice having the dynamo working.

  • Rene herse loup loup pass, 38mm.

If you don't like rh, there's quite a few at 47mm. I like vittoria terreno zero.

  • Ta. I ran 47mm WTB Horizon slicks on these wheels for their full life but I was looking at something smaller. 650x35 or x38 maybe, if I could find them in slicks

Panaracer do GK Slick in 27.5x1.5" (aka 650b 38mm)
