Epic WTF

  • They won't be walking or crammed onto busses or stuck in shitty classrooms full of 30 other little sweatboxes. Obviously some of them would've been driven in an air-conditioned range rovers so would've been fine but better to consider the rest a little.

  • How is this woke?

  • 'Epic WTF' thread, I think it is appropriate.

  • Being considerate is woke.

  • But lots are still going into school but then going home early which seems pretty pointless.

  • That does seem daft.

  • It’s the last week of school, they all need to be in to set off fire alarms, brick windows, and fight the neighbouring schools.
Or at least talk about doing that.

  • Oh I get that it is WTF, but don't see how anyone would call it woke.

@Drakien That is what gets me, being called woke isn't a slur and it is used by people who think it is.

  • Did we go to the same school?

  • but don't see how anyone would call it woke.

    That's the WTF really.

  • I suppose they've interpreted it as "mustn't melt the special snowflakes" or something along those lines. Still not seeing the woke angle but I think the word is now overloaded with many conflated meanings.

  • In any case, school is not a babysitting service (although the opinions voiced during the pandemic suggest many people think it is) and the kids are unlikely to learn anything by being there in a heat wave.

  • school is not a babysitting service

That’s a very simplistic statement. The reality is that most families can’t afford to not both be working and don’t necessarily have access to other family who can help with childcare. Most families rely on their children being in school so that they can both work - one parent being a ‘stay at home’ is now a luxury that you have to be reasonably well off the be able to afford, unlike with previous generations. Summer holidays often mean taking a big financial hit to somehow juggle work/kids, so any extra days can make life pretty difficult.

Edit: that came out much rantier than intended! In reality, I’m kind of on the fence about heatwave school closures. Perhaps it should be optional, so kids who’s parents are able can keep them at home, but kids who’s parents have no choice can send them in where they’ll have fewer bodies in rooms etc.

  • I’m kind of on the fence about heatwave school closures.

    Depends on the school, surely.

A thick walled large sash windowed Victorian brick built school is more likely to be able to keep things acceptable compared to a flat roofed 1970s school which would basically be an oven. Some schools have lots of outside space and tree cover, others do not.

  • I get it. The (similarly facile) counter argument is of course: factor all of that into your decision about whether to have kids and how many. Part of the reason we have so few stay at home parents (and correspondingly high living costs, perhaps?) is because school is thought of as being "always there to entertain your kids". Compare to Germany, for example, where (IME) that is not the perception of education.

My wife's a teacher, we don't have kids so my position may exhibit some bias 😂

  • I’m kind of on the fence about heatwave school closures

It just feels that way because of the sweat trickling down your crack.

  • I suppose they've interpreted it as "mustn't melt the special snowflakes" or something along those lines. Still not seeing the woke angle but I think the word is now overloaded with many conflated meanings.

It's just some incredibly dense bellend bullshit, trying to find meaning in it attributes too much intelligence to whoever wrote it, or it's satire.

  • You’re basically saying poor people shouldn’t have kids, though aren’t you?
It’s bullshit that poorer people choose to work rather than stay at home with the kids. That might be true of career-ladder climbing (upper?) middle class parents, but they’re likely to have access to other childcare anyway. The problem is lower paid jobs don’t pay enough to support a family on. Saying things like people assume school is “always there to entertain your kids” is loaded and I’d hope you could see that.

I guess we just have a system that isn’t set up with anyone other than the middle class or ‘above’ in mind. In fact, the idea probably is something along the lines of poor people should stop having kids.

  • In Germany, if the temperature is 27C before - I think - 0830, then the kids don’t go to school. No communication from schools, it’s just how it works. Like if you wake up and it’s Saturday, then the kids don’t go to school.

It makes sense and it works. Well, I say it works: parts of eastern Germany are like all the hellhole parts of the UK where parents would either not understand, keep kids at home on the wrong days or send them into school regardless.

  • Sorry, I realise I’ve basically picked up on a tiny part of what you said and then just gone off on one, to the detriment to the thread! Currently dismounting high horse.

  • The problem is lower paid jobs don’t pay enough to support a family on.

As someone who is intentionally childless I have to ask, why have children then?

Breeding isn’t requirement or responsibility, it’s definitely sometimes the social/hetero normative thing though.

I get that it’s not always going to be easy to break the routine of child goes to school, parent goes to work but I’d have thought that anyone considering having children should ensure they 100% have their ducks in a row and part of that should/would be “do I have the ability (whether that’s flexibility on working hours/leave or family nearby or being able to afford to pay for childcare) to take care of my child in all eventualities?”

  • Neighbour picked this up on their ring door bell last night - any ideas?

  • most parents (myself included) were clueless about everything that needs to be done to bring up kids before actually having kids. there were no ducks, in a row or otherwise.

i think the survival of the species depends on this cluelessness.

  • The old 'the poor shouldn't breed' argument is always edifying.

  • some sort of scan for car keys?
