On a separate note, my girlfriend has been gifted 3 months of perky blender subscription. Never had their coffee so wondering if anyone has experience with their stuff and has any recommendations?
We exclusively make espressos and cappuccinos with our Classic and don't love mild, very light roasts 🤔

Any recommendations for roasters in Ireland? I’m going over for a bit and want to get some decent coffee delivered to my in laws. Will be using a French press most likely

This is useful thanks, I have a blank basket so should really learn how to use it. Will pick up some Cafiza and descaler
Although all this faff does make me think I should sell the lot and just get a a Robot. But I'm stubborn so want to make it work first
magnetic funnel to avoid spillage
Got one of these recently too, made me realise how much more aggressive I needed to be with distribution than I was before. The small improvements here and there are definitely adding up

Calendar coffee! They're one of my absolute favourites - have had it delivered to London from there sometimes

Have UTFS, but anyone got a quick answer: planning to get the rhinowares hand grinder - 1) is it £30 worse than the Porlex 2)does the tall version fit in an aeropress and 3) if no, what is the capacity of the aeropress version? I'm sure these have been answered elsewhere, so thanks for the tolerance.

I think once you've done both processes once you realise it's not too bad and once you consolidate your routine it'll definitely be worth it! Of course it's necessary for me as I do enjoy cappuccinos, so couldn't do without a full on machine...
Mine is only modded in terms of having a PID, 9bars OPV and the Rancilio steam arm and is a very capable machine. As you say it's all "marginal gains" with all the other bits of gear and prep but it definitely adds up to better and very consistent shots. My next port of call is to finally switch to a posh basket like an ISM or VST to see what it's all about, definitely had plenty of positive feedback on here and elsewhere...
In fact, if anyone is selling a nice 15g double basket to fit a Gaggia Classic.... 🙂

I'm redoing the kitchen and soon to be the recipient of a shiny new oven with Induction hobs.
I brew exclusively with a Bialetti Moka pot.
I assume that this wouldn't work with an Induction hob? Anyone got an adaptor plate recommendation? -

These get posted in here sometimes in case you just want to switch to a pot that doesn't need an extra plate:

Top Moka is a good brand imo

About to do a DIY PID installation on the Gaggia Classic. Last AliExpress parcel arrived this morning. Wish me luck!

I know you've posted about these guys a few times now, but they're basically impossible to buy. I'd like one just cause they look nice. Where the hell do I get one?

Got one (2?) off eBay, another from Kitchen Essence in Ireland which doesn't seem to have an online store anymore.
Email the manufacturer? -

After a quick search it seems Steve Peel is absent these days, but big props to yellow bourbon for their very fast delivery for this sleep deprived new dad.
Coincided well with the arrival of my Lagom Mini too.

So, is the Niche Zero still the go-to home grinder these days? The day has finally come for my Sette's gearbox to fail and while there's another on the way (thankfully only €40, though annoyingly US/Canada-based owners seem to get free replacements), it's got me thinking about what to do when this next gearbox goes also (managed to get more than 3 years of regular daily use out of it with no issues thankfully).
-
• #22971
I still really like my Silenzio, obviously not as good for single dose as the Niche, and maybe retention is a bit higher, but it is a solid little beautiful machine that does what it needs to without complaint.
-
• #22972
Much appreciated, will have a look into that also. Single-dosing/grind retention is a big thing as my daily use is generally filter for me -> espresso for wife -> another filter for me, maybe followed by an espresso for me in the afternoon.
I'm hoping to get another few years out of this Sette gearbox on the way, but good to get the research done ahead of time so when I drop the idea of spending £600 on a grinder or whatever, the groundwork has been laid.

• #22973
Yeah sounds like Niche is a better fit in your case.
-
• #22974
My dad had a Sette 270w. Got a Niche. Much, much prefers it.
-
• #22975
That's my exact workflow and for me, the Niche is perfect.
Realise I'm quite late to tag along this discussion, but definitely do get a blank basket and get w descaling session in - the former should be quite regular (according to how often you use your machine of course), the latter will depend of where you are (if in London, very often).
I say this as I'm just about to put my Classic back together after removing solenoid valve and boiler and running a VERY long overdue descale and full clean after I started having issues with flow. Backflushing helped short term but clearly there were more issues. Looking inside the boiler answered my question.
I know it might all sound obvious and trite, but as someone who's always put off routine maintenance stuff like that, I know I won't make the same mistakes again after seeing the state things got to!
Also re the distribution, a cocktail stick does work well and I used one for a while. That made me want one of those fancy looking tools with a wooden handle and wirey legs, which I ordered off AliExpress along with a magnetic funnel to avoid spillage. all came to around a tenner and I'd say it has made a positive difference with consistency. Next step will be a fancier basket like an ISM Competizione or a VST. Machine came already PID'd and 9 bar'd so can't comment on the importance of those.
