Yes hence > before the climb ran out.
He was going hard at the bottom of the climb and made up ground fast but then stalled out and Matthews could come back at him. If the climb was better paced he could've still caught him before the summit, gapping him without dying a thousand deaths.
But he didn't. So, now you have to suck up a thousand MM images until the Vuelta.
He wouldn’t beat Matthews in a sprint, so he had to try and crack him before the summit. The last 2 kms of that climb was fantastic head to head racing.
