  • Thank you all for the quick response!

Great to know the ads are not really an issue per se - as long as they don't show up while I'm reading, I'm good. Should I go down the second hand route I might look into jailbreaking should it ever bother me.

The colour temp adjustment seems interesting but looks like a very new feature and people have read kindles in the dark for years so I'm inclined to think it should be fine, as @PhilDAS suggests.

I'm a luddite in the sense that I love an actual paper book but the idea of being able to easily read one handed in the dark (partner hates the side lamp on and always sleeps earlier than I do) and the general practicality of it might well mean I'll get back to reading a lot more than I currently do, which can only be a good thing.

I'd be using the Amazon platform mostly (reluctantly, but it's hard to escape big Jeff's oligarchy) so in short the basic Kindle with ads currently on offer for 40 quid looks like a very good deal. Might have a quick scour for second hand prices and go from there.

Thanks all very much for your inputs!

  • The Oasis is not worth the extra. I'd go for the paperwhite which i think is the best. Oasis is a pain in the ass as its wider and oddly shaped and cant fit in my back pocket like the paperwhite could.

  • Get a Paperwhite and install Calibre on the computer.

There are loads of books you can use Calibre to upload to the Kindle. Doesn't always have to be Bezos.

  • Does that still work? Last time I tried I had to install a really old version of the kindle software for it to work, been using a Kobo since don't know if Calibre improved it

  • You can upload pretty much anything to the Kindle so long as you convert to the right format.

I use calibre to convert and email it to Amazon as that means you can download it to multiple kindles and it will sync to the furthest page read.

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that always reading books on my iPhone is affecting my ability to fall asleep at night as that is when I do most of it. Kindle is the go to around here but since I refuse to become part of the Amazon family I bought a Kobo Clara HD. I've only had it a week or so but I think it's helping. Also less eye strain generally using the reader.

  • "To remain in compliance with updated Google Play Store policies, the option to buy Kindle books or subscribe to Kindle Unlimited will no longer be available in the Kindle app for Android with the release of app version 8.58. You can continue to read books in your library, read samples, and browse within the app but will need to visit the website - Amazon.co.uk/ebooks - on your preferred web browser to buy content or to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited."

Anyone know wtf this is about?

  • Google are forcing app developers to use Google's own payment system, which gives Google a 30% cut of every sale. Amazon are not okay with that, so pushing people to use the website to buy things, where they don't have to give 30% of their revenue to another company.

  • I see. Thanks for that.

Fuck Google then for breaking my Kindle app.

  • I'll be putting off updating my Kindle app for as long as possible then.

  • amazon "offers" on many things expire today. I shall be a starter user, would like to spend less time on my laptop. Thanks to reading posts here, it will be OK to get the ads version. I suppose I will download what I can for free from amazon and buy the rest. I have enough devices for everything else, this will just be for reading. But if any cross over is easy and useful I have apple things. Which Kindle to buy today? Nice lighting, bed time and travel use, reasonably future proof. thanks

  • I'd go paperwhite

  • Yep paperwhite all the way, I have the oasis which is great, and I use it loads but for a first device I think paperwhite is fine

  • Have an oasis. Much prefer a paperwhite. It's not an odd shape. It's slightly smaller with same features (PW could fit into my jeans back pocket, Oasis can't). Also cheaper.

  • thanks all, ordering paperwhite now.

  • Should say, I'm loving the battery life on my newish paperwhite, going weeks before it needs a charge, makes me happy.

  • Ah see I like the size of the Oasis, but then I essentially haven't left the house since I bought it 2 years ago...

  • Looks like Kindles are finally going to support ePub files as documents rather than having to convert them to mobi.

I still find it quite surprising how good the Kindle experience is when using third party books, not very Amazon-esque.

  • Get the Paperwhite for kids.
£5 more for a cover, 2 years worry free guarantee and 1y amazon kids+ subscription (if that interests you)

The kids features can be deactivated on the device, and otherwise hardware is identical.

  • My kindle seems to be doing endless updates even though it’s in aeroplane mode. Is this weird

  • Going to pick up an A4(ish) e-reader that can also take notes. Looking at Kobo Elipsa, but curious if anyone has other expertise thoughts?

Did you ever get something A4? Just had a look and they seem so expensive compared to tablets but reading large pdf reports on a laptop is doing my head in more and more

  • B-ok has been taken down!!! 😱

  • My wife complains that the lack of a backlight on her ancient kindle is the primary reason she no longer reads, so I'd like to get her a new one for mothers day.

The current basic kindle has a built-in 4 LED backlight, while the current paperwhite has a 17 LED backlight with adjustable warm light. How much better is this warm backlight on the paperwhite and is it worth the additional £45?

  • I think it's better. I couldn't quantify how much but given I read my Kindle every day in the dark I'd pay it (although there are a lot of deals that would probably make it less, you might even get trade in value on that ancient kindle).

If it's just the occasional read in the dark I'm not so sure.

  • Yeah, I think I'd pay for it for myself since I too read in the dark every night. But my wife has only ever been an occasional bedtime reader so this would need to be revolutionary.

On the one hand, I feel a bit bad getting her a lesser version than I'd get for myself, on the other, I just discovered that they sell anti-blue light screen protectors for a few quid which may be a partial solution (even if the reviews are bad).
