My thinking too.
I've agonised over several routes and I think this is the one I'm happiest with:

It can always be shortened on the night by heading straight via Fyfield and Ongar.

I did this last year, turned just after Finchingfield and came back home. The highlight was seeing all the hundreds of riders coming the other way, all the lights.
Unless you've got a need to go back a different way I'd recommend retracing, certainly the first bit. It would be a shame to miss the show! -

Can you share your route, please? I don't want to get on coaches or ride home in the blazing sun and this seems like a good workaround.
