  • That had been my plan as well after Greater Anglia said they weren't going to allow any bikes on trains over the whole weekend but something else came up.

  • Anyone after coach tickets might want to check Dunwich Dynamo Facebook page, as a few have been offered by people dropping out over the last couple of days. There's also a list of food and beers stops on there.
I can't commit to the whole thing this year so plan to set off early-ish (7:30-8) ride to The Bell at Great Bardfield and then ride back via Felsted and Blackmore. Weather forecast is looking good.

Could you share on here? Im not on facebook thanks!

Can you share your route, please? I don't want to get on coaches or ride home in the blazing sun and this seems like a good workaround.

  • It's a bit of a jumble as it's more of a thread than an organised listed. Here's what I make out so far (I've tried to order it):

    Moreton- White Hart Pub.

Fyfield Pitstop - Moreton and Fyfield Scouts are selling hot food, snacks and drinks.

    Various pubs until..

Great Bardfield- The Bell. hot food including vegan options, beer, bananas, water and maintenance area.

Finchingfield - Fox on the Green "open with live entertainment too." + BBQ

Sudbury- NO Fire Station bbq this year. The Cyclist is also closed

Sudbury- Torque Cycles. Drinks, Sales and repairs. Open till 4ish

Sudbury - slightly off route on Gaol Street. UK Best Kabab open until 1.30am

    Needham Lake - espresso guy

Gosberton Village Hall. Hot food Inc. vegan, snacks, drinks etc

Framlingham- Majestic Hare Apothecary. Coffee, food, etc.

Dunwich- Flora Tearooms and Sip Inn open from 4am.

  • My thinking too.

I've agonised over several routes and I think this is the one I'm happiest with:

    https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40150366

It can always be shortened on the night by heading straight via Fyfield and Ongar.

  • I did this last year, turned just after Finchingfield and came back home. The highlight was seeing all the hundreds of riders coming the other way, all the lights.
Unless you've got a need to go back a different way I'd recommend retracing, certainly the first bit. It would be a shame to miss the show!

  • Anyone looked into cycling to Stowmarket and getting back via Cambridge? The Stow-Cam route on National Rail says no cycle reservations required - albeit only 4 spaces. Reading Anglia’s DD policy it doesn’t seem to indicate we can’t use this service.

  • thats great escape audax route no? Could have breakfast at the blue egg.

  • @frank9755 🤔 I hadn't thought of that I'll run the idea past my companions...

    @Klar no problem!

@amey no but now I've seen it there are some similarities. Nice idea but I'm hoping to be home and tucked up in bed long before they open!

I've done this before too, despite having some reservations about riders potentially filling the road coming back at me, but it was actually fine and enjoyable. I think I was about half way back before I ran out of riders coming the other way, despite starting late.

Of course, a lot of people will try to tell you you are going the wrong way. In the end I resorted to shouting "I've left the oven on..!!" which was easier than trying to explain..

  • I might do a variation of this too as quite fancy going, but can't bear the thought of a coach (or cycling back) in that heat on Sunday.

  • Hope to see a few of you on the ride on sat/sun

  • @Oliver Schick been a long time.. would be great to see you on the ride if you are cycling out?

  • I'm going with the brompton crew this year 🤘

  • I am riding alone, as no club members up for it. I assume one just follows the light ahead? Alas I don’t have modern bike navigation.

  • Should be fine providing there's a good turn out. If you're unsure you can always stop and tag on with the next group of riders.

I would say you could ride with my little band but we're starting in Clapton and then turning round at Great Bardfield. I'll be on an a blue steel 'Ian Piper' if you see me feel free to ride with us as far as Great Bard.

There's someone on Facebook who puts a an 'f' on tree a tree in London fields for solo riders to gather around and then ride as an impromptu group. Might be a slow though.

  • Thanks for the advice. Will look out for the F. Worst ways, I could just stick Dunwich into Google maps and follow my phone if lost? I assume if you ask the rider next to you their destination and if they know where they are going, should be ok. Now to try and stay up as late tonight as possible, to adjust body clock 😂

  • Our informal bike club; Thighs of steel are doing a group ride. I'll be pinning a pink XR banner to one of the trees behind The Pub On The Park at about 7.30 as a meet up point for us. We'll be looking to set off about 8-ish.

You're very welcome to join us, the only condition being is we go at Party Pace, noone left behind.

Also traditionaly paper route sheets are sold at the start.

  • I'm sure you'll be fine. If you have have Ride with GPS on your phone this is the route. The food stops are outdated because its from 2019

  • Yep RWGPS as backup. I would also add don't assume everyone knows where they are going!

  • Spot on, thanks to all. Downloaded rwgps. Will keep an eye out for the X-RAY group.

  • On my first (and only DD, wish I could have managed to get on this one but have other things to do) I was solo and took the advice of @Oliver Schick to go without GPS (I think it was Oliver who suggested that anyway). I was fine to just follow the trail of lights in front of me the whole way and occasionally there were some small, quite easy to miss arrows at some junctions, so keep an eye out for those in case that's the case this year. Really added to the journey I thought. I did have the route saved to my GPS and phone though just in case I did end up lost somewhere.

  • Bike ready: Time for a quick snooze before tea.

Have a good one! If you see me give us a 👋
