  • How do I go about getting a private MRI scan for a fucked knee ligament?

It’s been a week since I was seen by NHS specialist who prescribed an MRI scan, but the appointment hasn’t materialised, could be weeks.

In the mean time, I’m freaking out about permanent damage.

Never had any private medical treatments before, no idea where to start...

  • The way I've seen it work, you get a referral from a private doctor to an MRI scanning service (maybe part of a private hospital). Normally you pay for the private doctors appointment, to get that appointment you're normally registered with them on an annual retainer.

  • You could drop by urgent care and wait to be seen.

  • It sounds like you're a bit further along than when I had this issue (my GP didn't see constant pain and an inability to walk more than 100 metres without needing to sit down as an issue worthy of referral).

I needed to see a private specialist to get a referral for an MRI and which bits needed scanning, I then booked in an MRI here https://www.alliancemedical.co.uk/scan-centres/london-harley-street-european-scanning , and they gave the results back to me on a CD which I then took back to the specialist.

If you've already got an NHS specialist who says you need an MRI you might be able to skip a lot of that.

  • I got one up by waterloo when I fucked my knee years ago. If I recall, I just bugged my GP to give me the referral and booked the MRI myself.
