It sounds like you're a bit further along than when I had this issue (my GP didn't see constant pain and an inability to walk more than 100 metres without needing to sit down as an issue worthy of referral).
I needed to see a private specialist to get a referral for an MRI and which bits needed scanning, I then booked in an MRI here https://www.alliancemedical.co.uk/scan-centres/london-harley-street-european-scanning , and they gave the results back to me on a CD which I then took back to the specialist.
If you've already got an NHS specialist who says you need an MRI you might be able to skip a lot of that.
