  • This is a thread for mountain bikes from the pre-progressive era, where 50mm stems and 800mm bars were not within our collective conscience, where bars were narrow enough to fit in your doorway and your bike didn't rival your cars wheelbase.

now i've met many, many lovely people over my time on the forum who have this either tucked away in their shed or riding them proudly every day - they look fucking sweet - would love some photos to save to my nice bikes folder and inspire with my own build

    some outline

    • Absolutely no progressive head angles
    • There must be at least one form of suspension
    • No "HaRdCoRe HaRdTaIls"
    • Long stems B)))
    • 26' // 27.5 // early 29ers it's all good
    • Drive sides, old videos, pictures of you/others riding
    • Readers rides heavily encouraged
    • 2x drive trains would be good to see, 3x would get further nods
    • Also interested in seeing peoples trailside drip in this era

  • @dicki and @ibob will likely find good home here

@Kidneys you should post your santa cruz

@velosaurus your shed is full of these things!

  • There must be at least one form of suspension

    banned

  • i think an essential rule should also be frame has to be QR only

  • Is there a way to hide this thread from @a**y ?

  • Shit, too late

  • My 2004 Kona Explosif

  • My 2005 Kona Coiler, from the pre-slack freeride bike days

Lots of fun and makes me want a bouncy bike every time I see it again

  • 2000 Avanti Montari Comp (pic from 2003)

I still have this bike. It has a Marz Bomber fork and (new for the era) Deore LX bits these days. Can't find any recent pics of it though.

Clearly I was way ahead of the short stem trend.

    probs a 25T cassette
Very uncomfortable San Marco saddle from a VicMTB Garage Sale perhaps.

  • Heckler pub bike. 1998.

Swapped the 90mm Easton stem out. Maybe I should put it back, even if only for the sake of my knees.

Has deus X cranks now. Probably a bad move.

Took a chainring and FD off. 1x9 is great. Juicy brakes, not so much.

If you could put a dropper on it (26.8) it'd be rideable in the woods - the BB is so high.
    Pretty fast cross country tho.

  • I found a pic of the Avanti at an actual race. There's a tonne of pics from 2004 Hard Day at the Office 8hr, but they're all of other peeps obvs

EDIT: here's another one later on at a Kona 24hr

  • Cannondale F1000 (2001?)

With a @BareNecessities handmedown fork and cranks, singulator, Syncros Cattlehead, Coda wheelset, chrome avid levers and xt V's, and some blue brake boosters. For boosting.

    Was light and silly.
Living a slightly different commuter life now.

  • With a BareNecessities handmedown fork

    And wheels!

  • Were these your wheels? What happened to the first wheels!? 😂

  • The rims were worn down to the point of exploding next time you inflated your tyres

  • Ideal for ebay

  • Also the pedals on that bike too...

  • current P7 in Epping, and previous P7 (stolen some years ago) on tour at Ryvoan bothy

  • does that count?

  • Great thread. I’m not sure if any photos of my Scott g-zero have survived this long, I’ll do some digging.
V-brakes, single pivot, cheap suspension and great fun until the swing arm cracked.

Any other g-zero owners? There were some lovely Scott hardtails too around 2000

  • Hinged Cattlehead is peak Syncros.

  • So many good bikes in here already!!!
