Well some saying that, he says he doesn't know.
So who knows. The human body doesn't always do what it should. He should be able to see and feel his condition, maybe he came knowing it wasn't right (but isn't saying that) , and hoped he come around.

That’s the most likely explanation I think. The Giro was the first grand tour he’s finished and it looks like he’s just not recovered fully from it.
