  • Wouldn't know who to specifically ask for such a small job, a hobbyist is prob the best bet. I would happily pay you if you did find some time to do them. I would give it a go myself if I had access to a metal lathe tbh!

  • Do you have the measurements? I could make one, but might not be for a couple of weeks.

  • Something like this with a hole at the bottom for tt spindle

  • I honestly won’t get any time any time soon as we have new baby demands. Otherwise I would be happy to make one as most my machining is for a record lathe I’m restoring, so it’s right up my street.

If it helps, the two measurements you really need there are the hole sizes, records are in imperial measurements, the 45rpm record hole is 1.5” and the spindle size is 5/16”

Prior to getting a lathe I got three aluminium cones, pretty much exactly as your drawing only three times the size for something else I was building, from a local engineering firm. Walked in with the drawing, an hour later came back with the parts for £65. There will likely be someone local to you if you have a look

Doh, yeah those are key. Will have a look around

  • Slightly OT but has anyone built their own mains cables or know anything about mains wiring in general?
Bought some parts to build a european multi-socket with a UK wall-plug and I thought Id done everything right but it ended up tripping my fuse box when I plugged it in.

  • Can you send any photos?

Did the MCB Trip, or the RCD?

  • I'll take some more pictures later but it tripped the RCD, power cut completely in the whole flat.
How would you wire the earth on a socket like this? I think thats probably where I went wrong.

  • On the marked earth terminal with one of those ring spade connectors?

  • Yes, an incorrectly connected earth (or live come to that) would trip the RCD. Where did you connect the earth?

As @Dogtemple says, ring tags are normally used on that type of earth connection.

  • Thanks for the help guys, have re-wired the earth with ring crimp terminal, hopefully that has solved the issue

  • So i am looking for ideas to fix my kitchen / dining system and wondered what I’m missing…

The room doesn’t have the best acoustics (a bit echoey) so absolute perfection probably isn’t worthwhile. I am currently running an Allo Miniboss player to some Celestion speakers and it sounds good, but loses points on ease of use as my OH doesn’t really know how to use Volumio - so it doesn’t get switched on too much.

    Ideal system would be:

    • easy to use and have a screen etc (or be able to stick a cheap tablet on to give same functionality)
    • include DAB radio
    • be capable of sync playback with further speakers that i can chuck in an adjacent room

    Options I can see:

    • stick with Allo (Volumio does sync playback but not that easy to use), buy cheap tablet as a screen and teach OH how to use it. Cheapest option but a bit buggy, looks not great, might still be a struggle to use sometimes. Sounds pretty good though.

    • buy a cheap amp (and one for adjacent room) and use Chromecast. Still no screen, but easier to use and gives loads of options. Any cheap but good sounding amp suggestions welcome.

    • buy a proper DAB and Spotify streaming device, either with or without an amp built in. Most expensive option but probably the ‘best’ overall (dream here would be if I can stretch to the Evo 75 I think) - I could then still use my 2 x Chromecast Audio and a smaller amp to get sync playback in the next room.

Is there anything I am missing - any other ideas?

  • I've always liked the look of Ruark, but their systems are a bit pricey, but they seem to do a lot of what you require.

  • Interesting - yeah that is a very all in one option, isn’t it?

tempted to rule them out as they have Mumford and Sons showing on the ‘track playing’ display on the pics on their website, mind

  • they also do nice but pricey connected wireless speakers that you can connect to your ruark radio/streamer,

@mashton will be along to discuss sonos with you, which feels like it's a solution to your audio problem.

  • Sonos? While you need a phone to control it, you can just tap a button on the speaker to keep playing thr last thing you stopped, I use this for radio in the kitchen often. The multi room is class leading if that's important.

  • Found this thing for 'displaying' my carts. I love it, but also feel kind of like one of those people who has a lot of fancy watches...

  • do you still use any of them? Or are they just display models?

  • Hah yes, the dynavector is fucked but I use the spu and the audio technica.

  • I bought one of these because it also does FM which is what my wife uses. Push a button, radio is on. Want HipHop for cooking, internet radio. Spotify also works. App and so on not the best and buttons are bad as you can't read the text, but quite capable all in all.

  • @mashton @cornelius_blackfoot

Yeah I can see Sonos is an option, just always been a sceptic - but maybe it does work well here. It has made me think about alternatives to Sonos - Bluesound might be good for multi-room function with better sound quality?

That said, these are still using a phone app which is OK but I’d kind of prefer a device that is all in one (like the various DAB radios). Maybe a cheap tablet running just Spotify, the streaming app and internet radio solves that for the least effort / cash…

  • I have a Ruark MRx. It's decent, but not exactly cheap. Overall I like it.

If I was finding fault, I do find it a bit annoying that you can't do a lot with it outside of the UNDOK app.

  • I have a sonos one in bathroom and kitchen, it was some auto adjust to the room features where you wave your phone around while it plays tones. You can airplay or whatever BBC sounds / radio app...

works pretty good for those purposes and

  • Hmmm I’m actually now liking the idea of a Bluesound Node with a Bluesound pulse speaker - I can use the Node in the dining room with the fixed speakers and have the best sound there, plus the Pulse can be in the kitchen or moved around (e.g. out on the patio) depending where i am…
