It's important for them because it makes them feel they're shouting at people rather than shouting at the void. It's why Musk was recently so annoyed when he found out ~70% of his followers and probably at least ~50% of all account on there are bots/spam. If Twitter got turned off tomorrow it would make the world a better place. Alternatively if journalists just ignored it rather than using it to do their job for them "News: This guy said this in a tweet" is not news.
