  • We are 6 years into our Samsung washing machine. 6+ loads a week.

Jazzy tunes silenced. Still works great.

  • Our Samsung singing washing machine drives me mad. Too lazy to change.

Energy rating of E on their dishwashers is a hard no.

  • Energy rating of E on their dishwashers

Has anyone ever "done the math" on what the different categories cost to run p.a? I've never checked the rating of any appliance I've bought as I've (lazily) assumed that it's either de minimis or not enough to offset a higher purchase cost over a 10 year lifespan.

  • There is a way of muting it. Highly recommended. Saves you from the cost of a new machine too.

  • Random google: https://www.idealhome.co.uk/property-advice/how-much-does-it-cost-to-run-a-dishwasher-297629

    "

    • An example B-rated 14-place full-sized dishwasher with an average annual energy consumption of 214 kWh would cost £42.80 a year to run.
    • Whereas an example F-rated 14-place full-sized dishwasher with an average annual energy consumption of 266 kWh would cost £53.20 to run per year.
      "

So not much in it. Although the above is probably based on "normal" electricity prices, rather than the current (no pun intended) rates of £1/hour of just thinking about electricity.

  • Aren't most of these calculations based on using twice a week. Most of the numbers I've seen are for 100 cycles. Well we ran our old one twice a day most days so water consumption and energy costs do matter.

  • twice a day most days

wow! Kids and 2x work from home?
2x a week sounds about right for us.

  • Yep. Kids and a wife who's version of washing up is putting on the dishwasher. When I WFH I can hand wash what little I use.

  • Thought dishwashers were more efficient than hand washing.
Or is that just what the dishwasher mafia would have us believe?

  • Washing a cup and maybe two plates? No dishwasher can compete with half a bowl of water. On a system boiler so the hot waters sitting there

  • That's the point though (and I know it's anecdotal) but if you were washing 20 plates and 10 cups your dishwasher might use less than 5 bowls of water.

Dishwashers become more economical when rammed full and used on eco mode. However if you leave stuff in it long enough for it to become full then stuff is crusted on. If you rinse stuff before it goes in then you've got to factor that water into the efficiency calcs too.

tl;dr there isn't a simple answer to which is more efficient

  • Kids and 2x work from home?

That’s us and we run it 1 to 2 x a day. Probably going to be cheaper to go out and buy lunch soon.

  • Happy to share Which recommendations if you're interested, let me know.

  • Our Samsung singing washing machine drives me mad. Too lazy to change

It's only pressing a couple of buttons to silence it!
press the 'rinse' and 'spin' buttons for 3 seconds. A struck through speaker icon appears

  • That's the point though (and I know it's anecdotal) but if you were washing 20 plates and 10 cups your dishwasher might use less than 5 bowls of water.

I used it everyday, I got a slim dishwasher that we still run even when less than half full (on eco) as it still take less water than washing the same load by hand as it is four times more water efficient than washing by hand per place setting.

  • bit late to it but also found asbestos (chrysotile) underneath an old carpet.

Getting a firm to dispose and perform air test afterwards. Probably overkill but with kids in the house, didn't want to risk it. Particularly as we want to sand the floorboards underneath once the tiles are gone...

  • water efficient

What about gas heated water used with handwashing vs. electric heated dishwasher?

  • This chart was clearly put together by Big Dishwasher. Can't imagine how you would use 9 litres to wash up a meal for 2.

  • They've clearly forgotten the art of a simple bucket in the sink like everyone used to do.

  • With the current gas price?

  • Isn't your average sink capacity something like 15l?

Doesn't seem like a stretch to think 9l are used each time someone washes up...

  • Where the fuck are you finding a dishwasher that only uses 0.94L of water? Does it scour the plates with sand????

Eco mode on dishwashers seems to indicate minimum 9.5l for most.

  • With a system boiler that's already heated the daily hot water in the tank for showers etc.. so may as well use the excess for washing up.

  • My grandparents washed their dishes by hand with two tubs of water, one soapy for dirty water then dishes rinsed in a second clean tub of water.

I don't see how any machine could clean using less water and energy than that, it's wishful thinking because we're too lazy these days, that and marketing..

  • Yeah but that’s for more than 2 place settings right? So will be 9.5l divided by c.10 meals
