That's the point though (and I know it's anecdotal) but if you were washing 20 plates and 10 cups your dishwasher might use less than 5 bowls of water.
I used it everyday, I got a slim dishwasher that we still run even when less than half full (on eco) as it still take less water than washing the same load by hand as it is four times more water efficient than washing by hand per place setting.
That's the point though (and I know it's anecdotal) but if you were washing 20 plates and 10 cups your dishwasher might use less than 5 bowls of water.
Dishwashers become more economical when rammed full and used on eco mode. However if you leave stuff in it long enough for it to become full then stuff is crusted on. If you rinse stuff before it goes in then you've got to factor that water into the efficiency calcs too.
tl;dr there isn't a simple answer to which is more efficient
