  • Aw, my assumption was that 4D plates would change in time. Misleading branding.

  • but data says that all qashqai drivers are cunts

  • Second only to Juke drivers

  • Don't forget Mokka

  • Still maintain that the solution to all these problems is to allow nothing but Caterhams on the road

  • The govt needs to stop SUVs being sold to people who don't need them. The owners won't believe that SUVs are wicked if they're legal to buy. Same story with high performance vehicles. Nanny state has to step in, because nearly everyone thinks that fixing the climate crisis is not their responsibility.

  • The govt needs to stop SUVs being sold to people who don't need them.

Better yet, ban on designing such vehicles rather, because we're so relaxed about it, it allow companies to create more and more SUV just because it's a desirable object.

  • ban on designing such vehicles

They really are a necessity for some people, what are they meant to do?

  • They really are a necessity for some people

People managed to live their lives before Porsche Cayennes were invented.

  • How are they a necessity for some people? Who really needs an SUV...?

  • needs an SUV

    Farm dudes?

    Who needs a car?

  • Yes but the people who need them tend not to drive Porsche Cayennes.

If you need to work in remote locations with little or no access via metalled roads then you need a 4wd vehicle which encompasses most SUVs.

If you regularly need to tow large trailers then you need an SUV or something similar.

Live on a remote croft in Scotland and need to guarantee your ability to get to town in winter, you need an SUV.

The list could go on for some time. If you live in London the arguements are less convincing but there are people who are lucky enough to live between a remote country property and London (other large conurbations are available). So what should they do by one car for the city and one for the country? Strikes me as being considerably more wasteful.

Maybe they could pick their favourite. If choosing London (olcaa), ditch the SUV.

  • They should probably buy an actual 4x4 and not a pointlessly tall and heavy car that's going to be shit at all the things you mentioned, but practical work vehicles and unnecessary SUVs have merged into a horrid status symbol middle ground that's worse for everyone.

  • Yeah it's the Brabus and Overfinch shit that needs to stop. I think it's a big ask working out how to make these cars no longer a status symbol though.

  • lucky enough to live between a remote country property and London

I wonder what percentage of London SUVs this covers

  • A sports utility vehicle is not a 4x4. They're different. Don't be triggered :)

  • I'm sure I read something about American pick up buying habits that showed that most of the people who bought them only used the extra space/pulling power/whatever considerable less than they thought they needed, and people that actually needed that used older trucks that are actually good at it. I imagine the story is similar with SUVs and unfortunately more and more pickups over here. Maybe a decent 4x4 sharing network and practical or less cars all round.

  • Interesting article here explaining that the problem might no be so much SUVs but cars with large engines. Simpsons paradox I suppose.

As I said....why not base it on mpg, emissions, NCAP rating and weight so people can drive anything that is safe? Doris in her 1l Qashqai is not the problem here.

  • The list could go on for some time.

With even more spurious examples? You're giving an argument for Land Rover-type vehicles, not SUVs. Also, you seem to be unaware of the existence of the Toyota Corolla.

  • Ah shit, here we go again.
This came up about 8 months ago looking at it, in this thread. Starts here I think - https://www.lfgss.com/comments/16266339/

    There's also a thread for this - https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/371258/

  • Cyclists who need to transport a bike or two to a cross race and don’t want them on the roof, hanging off the back or to have to do any disassembly

  • I dunno though, I think it "trickles down" a bit, this status symbol thing. If you can't afford the overfinch you still get a bit more of an ego trip being in an SUV lite or however the f you categorise a 1l car that's impersonating an offroad vehicle. Not everyone's a Doris
