Identify a bottom bracket on a 1989 Raleigh MTB

Posted on
  • Hi all. I'm trying to identify this BB before I buy this bike. It's a 1989 Raleigh MTB. Image is from the seller and am not sure if it's skewed, but it seems like quite a big diameter, square taper. Would like to know if I can replace it if knackered. Many thanks!

  • Old BMX bottom bracket with square taper spindle? Is it a Raleigh Mustang?

  • Something like this looks like it:

(old 3-piece cranks in a 1-piece crank shell)

  • It is indeed a Mustang.

  • One of these might work - US to Euro BB (Euro is BSA in the BMX world, right?)

  • Otherwise, you're into one-piece cranks - proper old school!

  • Great, thank you @c00ps! So these are old American style BMX bottom brackets? It seems like there are some threaded ones and also pressed-in ones (https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/opc.html). Mad! I suppose I won't know exactly what it is until I buy it but replacements are possible. Also seems to be highly serviceable so maybe shouldn't be too worried.

I'm left wondering why there's a US BB shell on a retro British bike brand?

  • US market? (Raleigh sold over the pond also)

Copy of american klunker? (slack headtube, etc.)

    Some other only-known-in -Nottingham reason.

Who knows? Maybe this was the betamax of bottom brackets?
