That was the first thing I tried; however, if you try booting into recovery mode and restoring from a TM backup, it’ll force you to perform a clean re-install of MacOS via the internet first, then restore your data. It’s a long winded ballache that takes ages and required downloading ~12GB.
I’m looking for something like Clonezilla, which lets you just clone a disk image to the machine in 10 minutes.
