  • Digital wheelbarrows. Bitbarrows. For carrying large quantities of bitcoin.

    £200 mil seed funding plz.

  • The motors we use are from Netgain in the US but made in Italy and shipped straight to us in The Netherlands. The batteries are either second hand (Tesla) or new (Mercedes / VW overstock). The chargers are from China and we import them ourselves. The BMS system we use is from Latvia.
A kit for a VW Beetle starts around €23.000 ex VAT for a diy conversion with 44kWh of batteries and 20kW of charging. Fast charging is not available on “low” voltage conversions and “high” voltage conversions are more money because the motor costs more and you’ll need extra parts for CCS. Lots of conversion prices include restoration work which means more hours which means more money. Economy of scale plays another big part; we sell around 100 Hyper9 motors a year, some in a kit and some to companies creating their own. That is peanuts compared to an OEM.
Prices will only come down a bit through government incentives as raw materials only go up in price as do labour costs.

*I chose a Beetle kit as an example because it’s a simple conversion without any frills. No extras needed like ac, power steering.

  • Officially EV (wid a mahoosive vacuum cleaner) now has the fastest Goodwood Hill Climb.

    39.08

  • Watched that earlier, almost the sort of acceleration you see on RC cars!

Big fan of the looks too

  • Pun intended

  • Big fan indeed!

  • Reverse gear in the little fiat has gone awol.

Will this fail the mot it is booked in for on weds? Will call my garage in morning but apart from hassle of not going backwards is it even an MOT issue

  • Gearbox needs some attention so knew this was coming. Will be showing it some love

  • It's like looking at widescreen video on a 4:3 screen.

  • Much better with the correct aspect ratio.

  • Maybe depends on MOT had a motorbiked engined kit car that didn't fail for no reverse gear.

Is the gearbox a non sycro first/reverse, if I remember the age of your should be a non snycro first, check the plastic bushes haven't worn out in the change mechanism in the floor it is usually that especially if the gearchange is vague. Will search for an image..

Check gearbox oil level, and if been filled with the right non ep gearoil not gl4 and especially not gl5. If it has had GL4/5 oil in the gearbox it is is most likely fucked requiring at least sycro bearings and brone bushing replaced and will be very expensive to rebuild even at home. In the early 90s if a gearbox failed and the oil smelt of ep additives when drained. Didn't even bother to open the gearbox to check just swapped the gearbox at a breakers.

  • Nicked from ebay Usually bush number 6, and check 16 and 17. But the 9, 10, 11 bits can wear and introduce play as well as nut 8 becoming loose, but these can be checked from inside the cars, These can be checked from inside the car.but means removing seats and carpet to expose the mechanism. As you can not see much underneath

  • So we'll soon be living in a Scalextric/Hot Wheels world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JYp9eGC3Cc&t=5s
Will there be loop the loops and criss cross crashing? What about that clockwork Scalextric thing which used to slowly block the track? I can't remember what it was.

  • yeah cheers dude.

it is non synco yeah. just spoke with the garage and it's not an MOT fail so will press on with that anyway on weds and discuss with them getting the gearbox looked at. I had originally spoke with them a little while ago as started to hear a few grumbles, particularly when in 3rd. we have also traced a small oil leak to the gearbox so this is all in the mix.

will get the MOT sorted and press on from there.

the lack of reverse didn't spoil a picnic on knettishall heath yesterday. having no reverse not a big deal when the car weighs as much as a teaspoon.

  • Thanks for all the detail. Very interesting.

Do you ever wonder whether it would be better to not bother with modifying the steel bodyshell of an ICE car and just get a carbon tub made which resembles the original car but has sensible places to put the electric gear? Maybe this is just scifi, but if I was rich I'd go looking for a firm which could scan a bodyshell and use CAD to edit it and then press a button to get a tub made. I don't know whether the type approval/IVA process would allow this, but I'd like a one off ultralight carbon campervan, with no side impact bars or any of that stuff. Like that EV camper which some students built, but tailored to my requirements.

  • Solid 8/10, would defo crash that into a hedge

That was my immediate thought but these are golf-club accessories or labours of love ; shiny trinkets for those who can afford them and want to be able to wow / impress / befuddle their peers with their tales of ingenuity. Objective utility / value / viability of the final product just won't really come in to it.

Prices will only come down a bit through government incentives

It concerns me a bit that govt. incentives would be anywhere near it tbh. But I think what is meant here is that 'prices will only go up'

  • In The Netherlands that would be next to impossible to get on the road. We can’t really modify the shell end even swapping a Mini into a standard grp shell is getting very difficult.

  • A Taycan will impress your gc buddies more than an ev Citroën DS.
And there are many incentives for new EVs allready in place so why not for conversions? Why should I be paying for someone elses new EV and not for someones conversion? I like looking at a classic car a lot more than looking at a Model Y.

  • If it is a regular ticking not related to engine speed it is probably a heater valve pumping coolant around or a Charcoal Filter vent valve pulsing fuel vapours into the engine, both normal function, can be improved by insulation between the valves and mounting points.

  • It looks great without a plate.
Are you allowed a bonnet sticker or is it track only?

  • looking good, mate. well done
