Cranks and chainline

Posted on
  • Hi guys hope you all good and sound

I want to run a smaller crank on my trackframe after bending the 1 spider arm of my omniums.
Have a few in mind in the line of the Shimano zee or Saint who do in 68mm width.

I'd like to know if that will give me major chainline issues? p.e. the zee has 50.4mm chainline that potentially could be sorted with cog spacers if there is thread on the hub for the spacers+cog+lockring...

Q: Any alternative small bcd crank suggestions that can maintain the chainline?

wanted to avoid bmx cranks because they tend to be less spinny and huge q-factor but if has to be, it will be as a last resource.

I am running BLB King hub, my shell is 68mm. Rear spacing is 120mm.

Changing wheelset also out of question because that will imply spending £, but I am aware that a Halo fix-g per example could help, but again, would require rebuilding my wheelset where I already invested £.

    Thanks in advance

  • I ran Deore hollowtechs on my fixed gravel bike for a bit, chainring inside the spider and spaced inwards with some chainring spacers.

That was with an iso rear hub but rear chainline od more or less the same as a threaded track hub.

Depending on the frame and how much clearance you have at the pedal end of the crank arm/chainstay you could probably mess around with the spacers, hollowtech mtb bbs use 2 x 2.5mm spacers on the driveside and one on the non drive side, you could put move one from the drive side to the non driveside. That wasn’t an option for me as it’s have brought my crank arm to close to the stay but my stats were wide spaced for tyre clearance.

  • Thanks mate for the info. Definitely helped me for consideration.
G-fix hub from halo is also an option since you can play with splined spacers to have the cog in the sweet spot ;)🙏

  • G-fix is the bees knees. Skip at all fettling and sort it out at the hub. We swear by them at work.
