my dad has a 3.6 Legacy Outback, but it's basically knackered now and he wants to replace it with something which has the same combination of:

    engine with torque and poke
    auto
4WD, somewhat raised ride height desirable but not necessarily essential
    estate body

budget £10-£15k for maybe a 5 year old car [edit - having had a quick trawl through autotrader, I can see that used car prices are even more nuts than I thought they were so this budget and age may not be realistic].

The new Outback has the 2.5l flat 4 which s fairly anaemic at 169PS, so that's not an option. What else is out there? AMG / M levels of performance is not what's required, I'd guess in the region of 250BHP would be ideal.

  • Given the estate body have given way to the SUV I can't think of much. And that budget is surely tight for a 5 year old car now things are mad.

Spend a few grand rejuvenate the legacy?

Having an old 2004 outback i really do love it. So capable at everything and just takes abuse. The autobox in it is shit, but put it in manual mode and it is Jekyll and Hyde transformation.

Maybe you could look at a volvo xc60, but not sure if fast enough or estate enough.
