I assume that guard’s purpose is to help stop the tire from flinging mud/dirt/grit down onto the chainset/chain? In conditions like they encountered during that ride, I can’t imagine that it made much difference at all. Especially with the front tir simultaneously flinging the same mud/dirt/grit back at the moving bits.
