Basically, if it's in the lawn, mow it again and again.
If it's in your borders, pull up as much of it as you can, as soon as you see it, or use horrendous toxins.
Neither poisoning or pulling it will do anything quickly, both will need to be repeated for years. So there seems little reason to use the chemicals.
