  • Currently getting shade by the side of the M4 waiting for the breakdown people... my petrol gauge is a bit dodgy so think that running on fumes may be the issue...

  • Urgh, hope fix is simple.
Also, warning triangle should be much further forward than that to improve safety, 50m from car IIRC.

  • Cheers still waiting - coming up for 2 hours .! Top tip on the triangle though 👍🏼

  • At least you are not on the smart motorway section with no hard shoulder. I hate driving on that :(

  • That would be RIP me and the car I think...!

  • BMW grilles are getting ridiculously big nowadays.

  • Stay safe and hope it it a simple fix.

  • Thanks back home now, got winched on to a flatbed truck to a garage- put in some petrol and all is good 😎

  • Me, my folks, and a few people on here have used we chillanycar. Would recommend.

  • Also in the French warning triangle thing, I'm pretty sure you need two (front and rear). Most cars only come supplied with one.

  • Nope.

Just the one to the rear, the gendarmes told me that

  • The French kit rules are apparently based on what you need to stop and help others as well as if you break down yourself.

  • I've got a fucking annoying rattle and I'm about to drive 1,100km to France on Wednesday.

It's in a panel underneath the screen on my Model Y. Pushing upwards on the panel immediately stops the rattle and it immediately starts again when I remove pressure.

Behind the panel is an air sensor (black thing pictured) with a small fan in it. Inside the panel are two bolts that connect the screen to the dash and the wire that feeds the screen (also pictured).

I've already tightened the screen bolts and placed some foam pads (dark green pictured) around the perimeter of the panel. This hasn't fixed the issue.

What can I do ahead of tomorrow?

The wife has a load of cushion stuffing material etc - would that combust if I stuck it inside there? I'm going to electrical tape the connector.

It's doing my fucking head in.

  • Tried padding on the clip that slots in first, so as to create more pressure on it, tape could also go on back of facia . I wonder if by pushing up your remove the rattle because that becomes disconnected from the facia.

  • is it the plastic panel which rattles? try some strategically placed blobs of blue-tack.

  • I'm guessing it's those little plastic tabs/tangs that click into place... Vibrating against the edge they clip into. Try a bit of tape on the outside edge.

Alternatively you could try a small amount silicone grease or spray around the edge of the whole unit before clipping it in. Might help.

  • Maybe it's a special setting, like the fart noises and crackling fire?

  • How tight is the tolerance between piece and orifice? I’d try lining the orifice and clips with thin textile Tesa tape, the type that’s usually used for cable wrapping.

  • Copydex- not sticky enough to be difficult to pull apart, but sticky enough to stop the rattle. As the owner of a 25 year old car I can promise this works.

  • that sucks @Soul hope some of the wise suggestions in here help before you set off for the big trip dude

  • Enjoyed seeing this amongst others Sat...

  • Thanks all.

It now has half a roll of electrical tape in it. So far (10 min nursery drop off), it seems to have resolved the issue.

Let’s see at 4am Wednesday when I start 14 hours of driving!

  • Hoping someone can give me an idea of what this could be..

I have a ticking noise from the engine compartment thats intermittent. I cant locate exactly where from unfortunately.

It started a few weeks back and at that time i thought it was connected to making a gear change as using the clutch seemed to make the noise start / stop. Now it does not seem to be connected to using the clutch anymore. At least i cant get it to start stop by using the clutch anymore.

Some rides it can be completely quiet. Some rides it comes and dissapears after a few seconds or halv a minute or so. Or its there until i restart the car at which point it can be silent for the entire next drive or not.

Sounds like a clock more or less. It goes at a steady pace and the rythem is not connected to the revs as its constant regardless of rpm.

    Any ideas?

  • Doesn't happen when stopped and idling?

  • Fan?
Either way just turn the radio up.
