Should I raise the straddle wire clamp up a bit? Brakes not great at the moment.

Lower straddle = spongier feel = more stopping power
Higher straddle = crisper feel = less stopping power

GENERALLY

There’s a sweet spot for each set up - and how wide are those rims? That might be a factor.
