Cutting up boxes, opening packages etc.
I have an old nylon handled supermarket chef's knife for that sort of thing.
I keep it sharp enough to take the balls of anyone that decides to use any other kitchen knife to open things.

As Lynx suggested, but the Fatmax alloy body, with its locking screw is better than any of the others I've used and broken.

Mora Companion is cheap enough to abuse, plenty sharp enough for hack n slash

I have The World's Sharpest Kitchen Knife tm. Shit as a kitchen knife, ok for things you wouldn't want to use a kitchen knife for.
But ultimately, get a Stanley knife.
