We have one of those portable AC units. It is great for cooling a room before you use it, I would reckon it's too loud to use comfortably while in the room. We used it to cool our spare room last night as it was 30 degrees in there (flat roof dormer). Got it down to 24 in about an hour.
I did get an extension hose as otherwise the one it comes with is too short to be able to put it in a lot of places we needed to. If you do that, make sure you get the right diameter. I lost it in the move and got one that was only slightly smaller, but it made a huge difference to the efficiency. It basically didn't work at all.
Also, if you have a long hose, that is going to be a heater for whatever room/space it is running through. But if it is long enough, you can position it outside the window in such a way that there is less need for a good seal/flange or anything.
