I also think patriotism is generally a force for good. Isn't it the impetus to create a society you feel proud to live in?
My problem with that is it seems to imply those improvements should be limited to your country. I want a planet I'm proud to live in.

Italy is a great example of this. Draghi leading a technocratic government is very much the exception to this rule and feels weirdly sensible.
