Really the hubs need rebuilding onto wider rims
This wont solve anything, if anything even a tiny bit out of true wheel will make the pads rub. When I had mini Vs I went from open pro to archetype to HED, nothing solved the mini V issues. Eventually went canti which didnt have any of those issues but at the end of the day they were .. cantis.
Sheldon talks about mechanical advantage of cable pull for cantis vs mini v somewhere
word of warning; cantis require a bit of faff adjusting
Discs are the ultimate truth
Bike rides really nice with drops, love to have a gravel bike :)
Feels like the drop bar bikes I liked most, my old caadx and my old drop bar pompino, riding off road on drops is so fun.
The brakes still fuck me off
The rims are too narrow for the tyres which causes them to balloon
This limits the amount of the brake track which can be used due to the pad getting stuck on the tyre
The Paul brakes require a very close rim spacing to have a good and strong lever pull, which again, is limited by the ballooned tyre, they have to be pointed upwards
They’re constantly out of line which rubs the Finnish off the rim
Really the hubs need rebuilding onto wider rims, contrary to the description of the rims I don’t think they’re grails? The ballooning is too much for a supposed 19mm internal width (also can’t seem to see rim brake grails) they seem to closely match stand alpha rims tho, which are 17mm internal and the tyre profile would suggest this is correct.
But a few hundred quid to rebuild these onto adhns/ quills is out of scope, so I will just have to have the wheels marked and squeal occasionally, forcing me into an hour of trying to align the pads.
