This reminds me I really need to get going on my StockX-disrupting side project. I mean, traded commodities being transported to the exchange to be verified post-sale, then being actually shipped to the buyer is frankly prehistoric. Let alone having to be re-authenticated if sold again!
It really should be possible to instantly trade digital certificates representing pre-authenticated pairs (or fractions of pairs) held in trust. Then you'd open up opportunities via options, short-selling, mutual (perhaps index-linked) funds, derivatives etc.
It should also massively improve fungibility, in that sizing would become completely irrelevant.
