The Crown is nice not to far from Angel.

Thanks!

Many, any moons ago I used to like The Castle (in Angel)
Had a roof terrace and the ricketiest staircase to get there -

I like the Alma near Angel, Plaquemine Lock is also good. Lots of decent options if you stay off Upper Street.

For Bermondsey you want riverside charm, go to the angel (of Cobblemonster fame) or the Mayflower for ye olde vibes.
In Angel I'd always default to the early of essex or the island queen.

+1 for Earl of Essex, great bear selection
-
• #733
Yep, I usually default to the grizzly but it's really nice to know that they also have brown, koala, polar, care, sloth, sun and spectacled available should you fancy a change... 😉

Another vote for Earl of Essex.

Ha you'd think I've already had a few "bears" today!
PS don't forget the drop bear, it certainly packs a punch

Thanks everyone, will check those out!

Earl of Essex decent shout. My go to is the Charles Lamb. Definitely get away from upper street. Decent pubs in the back streets

No one mentioned the Island Queen on Noel Road? Earl of Essex a great shout though and, yes, stay off Upper Street.

Island Queen mentioned five posts up

I'm having a great start to the day, mate! :D Didn't get any of the Heardles either, despite knowing them...
EDIT: I am going to blame the lack of capitalisation. Yeh that's it.

Charles lamb was closed on a Saturday afternoon when I tried going there a few weeks ago. Worried it might be terminal. It is/was a great pub tho...

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Any recommendations for decent pubs round Soho that aren't going to be brimming with nobheads on an early Friday evening?

It always had problems with neighbours getting annoyed at pavement drinking and noise.
Its a shame if it’s gone because it had lots of character.
I used to take my team there for their performance reviews and get them drunk after trying (and failing) to bollock them.

The Old Coffee House tends to be a bit less brimming with nobheads I find, or one of the Sam Smiths', the Red Lion or the John Snow.
Or just embrace it and get yourself in to Be at One for happy hour.

Avoiding Sam Smiths pubs has really thinned down my drinking landscape (including the bermondsey Angel and many in Soho).
The French House used to kind of have a no knobheads door policy. Haven't been in ages. Always pretty rammed though.

How come you're avoiding Sam Smith's pubs? The insane owner or the fact that they happily allow fox hunting on their land? I still can't resist a £2.20 pint of Taddy at The Angel any time I'm in Leeds though.

I always used to go to the Star and Garter on Poland St.

My first job was round the corner from the S&G and we were probably the Friday night nobheads. At any rate, we were there most Fridays.
Any suggestions for pubs around Bermondsey/Southwark? I know there's loads but I don't know the area very well so want to avoid the shit ones! Also looking for recommendations around Angel.
