Cannondale Ai wheels

Posted on
  • Hello, I'm looking for some wheels for my cannondale Superx, 2019 model I believe, and having a bit of a nightmare.
The frame requires the rear wheel to be dished with 6mm offset to the left and I can't find any off the shelf wheels available.
Tried to redish my current wheel at my Lbs but they couldn't do it. After some research and speaking to another wheel builder, I understand that it's not advisable to redish wheels due to spoke length and risk of rims cracking (of carbon).
Does anyone know if there are suitable wheels in the market, or any wheel builder with experience on this? I'd like to have relatively light wheels without spending a fortune, currently have 40mm Chinese carbons on novatec hubs...
    Thank you

  • A wheel builder should be able to make a custom build with the correct spoke lengths. Not sure why there would be an increased chance of rim failure as long as the tension is balanced; IIRC Ai pulls the rim closer to the centreline of the hub so if anything the wheel should be stronger.

    FWIW I use OTP wheels re-dished on my 2016 F-Si and I haven’t died.

  • Why not rebuild those? What type of rims you on? Symmetric or not? What’s hub dimensions like?

    Oops. What @Howard said.

  • Thanks @Howard, I know it might be possible to build wheels from scratch but would be expensive vs off the shelf wheels.
Sorry what are OTP wheels? Carbon rims?

  • Because they are Chinese carbons which had a lot of use and I was told that they might crack. I'm not worried about safety, more like spending money for spokes and labour for a wheel that might not last.

  • I’m slightly confused here. You said you already have carbons on novatecs? Why not rebuild those?

Ok I can see next message.
Just rebuild them. If there’s no cracks just go for it. Set of lasers will set you back about £150 plus labour? Seems like the easiest of options. Someone saying they ‘might’ crack is entirely speculative.
I might get crushed by a piano tomorrow!

You’ve very unlikely to find a set of OTP (off the peg) that are specifically dished 6mm non drive side

  • Because the Lbs tried and couldnt manage, spoken to Arup and he wouldn't take the job, did some research and others say that it's not advisable. Asking here to hear more opinions.

  • I’m still not sure I understand. Did you just ask them to redish? Because I’d refuse that as well. That’s far too an extreme change in tension vs spoke/nipple length.

Rebuild the whole thing with new spokes.
I don’t know what you currently have so can’t offer more info than that

  • I imagine it's not advisable because they were on about using the spokes already in the wheels. One side would be too long and one side too short if you tried redishing.

What the guys above are saying is buy new spokes and rebuild the same rims and hubs with new spokes the right length.

There's no extra risk, as Howard says, the rim would actually be straighter over the flanges of the hub

  • Yeah wot chak said

  • I’d say on prose, Wot you said makes more sense!

  • This is what I have asked the builder to do, use old rim and hub but new spokes with correct length.
Anyway, sounds like I just might need to find someone else. Any recommendations for a wheel builder, ideally North East London? Thank you all.

  • Not sure about NE, but hit up Jamie at SBC Cycles and see what they say.

  • Will do, thanks.

  • We had a guy through the workshop with this issue. He turned up with a new (low spoke count) FFWD rear wheel and ‘just wanted it moved 6mm to the NDS’. It was a royal pain in the arse but he was adamant he didn’t want them re-spoked. I wouldn’t do it again without a complete remeasure and lace-up.

  • Interesting.. Sorry what workshop are you referring to?

  • My bike workshop

(*edit - Sorry, Punk Bikes, Cardiff)

  • Ok thanks, bit far for me unfortunately!
