Possibly to make sufficient space for a second lamp to be wired into the same plug.
FiL did this sort of thing - he didn't see the need for earth connections on 'properly maintained appliances' while living in a house that had Bakelite round pin sockets of various sizes, apart from in the new kitchen extension (new in 1976)

I completely re-wired it, but can’t think why it was wired in the way that it was when it arrived.
