Think it was more just preserving the tyres as he knew he wasn't going to be gaining any places. Don't think it was some sort of 15yr old vendetta for Hungary 07!

yeah - Alonso knows there is a very high risk in overtaking in Monaco - so why stress the tyres at their early point when they need to go long on the actual race - in the end he was proved to be correct, and could pull away to a 4 to 5 second at the end.
just look at the front runners for tyre deg and pushing hard issues!
