  • Yes of course. Need to get some tubes first. This is very much gonna be taken to my LBS though to be built. I don't have a headset press or even tools to fit a square taper BB - ha. I haven't touched a square taper BB since probably 2013 or something.

Check how much shipping is first. By shipping @Tijs frame to me and then onto him myself he saved a shit load of cash in shipping. They wanted $800 or something lol. Happy to do the same for you with rims. Even to ship stuff from one side of the U.S. to the other, I paid $128 for the frame box and a wheelbox.

  • The last thing I need to decide on that I am yet to order is brakes. I really can't decide if I want to spend $300+ on Paul brakes or if I should just buy some Tektro/Shimano canti's. Unsure if I even want to use canti's, but I don't think a Mini-V of any kind will clear a 48mm tyre and I fear it might get in the way of racks and stuff. And I'm not messing around with travel adapters for a V-Brake.

  • Just to say - I was/ am jealous of you going car free, it wasn’t meant to be dismissive. The crust will be great and I check the thread when it’s bumped, but the lifestyle choice is what I envy. That and the climate obviously.

  • Paul is a waste of money, imo.

  • That's what I am thinking too. Seems asburd to spend that much on brakes.

  • Didn't come across that way at all! I was just saying that Pasadena is not like LA in the bike friendly sense. West LA is not bike friendly at all.

It has its pros but definitely cons too. For example, in this photo, I live in the green circle. When I had a car, I could drive to trailheads on any of the red roads very easily and go and explore new places whenever I wanted to. However now, I am limited to the trailheads along the yellow line - because I hike by myself and don't really want to rely on anyone to drive me into the mountains. I could take an uber into the mountains, but there's no cell service up there so I cannot book an uber out of the mountains. Anyway, fortunately I really like hiking long distances and am happy to hike up into the mountains from the yellow trailheads, but still, the further into this range you go, the more wild it is, so its a shame that it'll be tougher to see that. With that said, I can easily rent a car :) Just can't do that kind of stuff as spontaneously as I used to.

ANd in the winter, you can ski at Mt Baldy on the right hand side of the photo and that whole area is absolutely incredible as well. It's only 45 minutes away by car. So again, just requires some car rental planning if I want to go there.

  • Shimano do a canti that works with non long travel levers?

    https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-br-cx50-cantilever-brake

  • Yep, that one is in the runnings, as well as Tektro CR720s.

  • Seems asburd to spend that much on brakes

  • Don't think I haven't already seen them!

I am semi, semi tempted to just take the XT canti's off the stumpy and put some v brakes on there, but seems a shame to split up the XT group considering the bike is almost entirely 1990 catalogue spec....

  • Been thinking about this all day. I'm yet to order brakes or brake levers. I ordered handlebars but they were cheap so I can just keep them in reserve.... do I build this with flat bars????????????? God damn Blue Lug's instagram...

  • The best cantilever brake I have ever used is the Kore Kross. V-style pads, Easy to adjust - superb power.

Not bling, but Campagnolo sold a re-badged silver version which looked cool. Not easy to find the latter though

  • What about the Velo orange grand cru cantis? Not quite as absurd money as the Pauls and they look quite considerably more fancy than anything from Tektro/shimano.

Edit: was supposed to be reply to @JB

  • What about tektro cr 710? Save £££ compared to the velo orange brakes, which I've heard need loads of tools for adjustment

  • Those VOs look a lot like trp revox.
    There's always avid shorty ultimate.

  • I just saw this...

Using a 9speed road shifter with a 9 speed mtb mech?? wont the pull ratios be effected?

I know you can use 10 speed bar end shifter and 9 speed mtb mechs which achieves the same pull and can get you 10 speed...

  • with 9 speed the shifter "dictates" the gears, at least with shimano. as far as i know alle the shadow (not shadow plus) work.

retroshift/gevenalle work that way (shimano bar end shifters)

  • +1 on Shorty Ultimate.

Or, while basic, Frogleggs have a particular romantic appeal (including toeing them in by bending with a large adjustable spanner).

    Or Spooky

  • Okay so brakes are gonna be silver or potentially gun metal if XTR. No black parts on this build.

Those VO brakes are the ugliest cantilever brakes I have ever seen.

9 speed road and MTB parts work together natively. Cable pull was the same afaik. Either way, I have it on good authority that these work tremendously together.

  • I’m in the process of swapping the drops off my gorilla monsoon for flat bars, just think they’re so much better suited to off road riding and with big fat tyres speed isn’t the ultimate decider.

Ordered some VO Seine bars which out of all the flat/swept bars I’ve tried seem the best width and shape.

Going with flat bars means v brakes and decent levers are easy.

  • Dia Compe DC980 are a similar style to the Kore Kross mentioned about but a bit more classic. Similar to Paul Neo retro but not silly money (and easier to set up…). Come with rubbish pads though.

It’s going to look amazing whether flat or drops bars. I’m permanently undecided on this issue myself.

  • subbed

  • That’s what I’m saying. But I worry it’s then just very similar to the Stumpjumper but a luxe version. Which doesn’t make that much sense to me. So I think I’ll go with drops.

  • Headset installed.... progress slowly but surely.
