  • Ooooo

I need an op. I cant seem to convince NHS doc though. Any suggestions?

I do heavy weight lifting and have seen it getting progressively worse. I don't want it to interfere with training (the final tear not the op).

  • I had an inguinal one fixed with a mesh implant. Incision ~4cm long. Post-op was absolutely excruciating when trying to stand up/walk. I think that passed fairly quickly though. Apparently it's worse in relatively young/fit people as the muscle tone (pre-op) tends to be better?

  • I did mine last August and got offered op in April (which I was away for) and now for Sat. I'd go to the GP and tell them it's getting worse and interfering with day-to-day activities. If there's a danger of it getting acute then they are more likely to speed you up. You probably need to accentuate the pain/discomfort a bit rather than saying it's all fine. Can't think that heavy weight lifting is optimal!

  • Apparently it's worse in relatively young/fit people...

Well, I should be fine then! I guess relatively fit (given the very low bar of pre-op questions were can I walk up stairs without getting out of breath), but not so much on the young side of things.

  • Wellllll... I found out I had it when a surgeon looking at my torn bicep stuck her finger into my bellybutton stating with glee I should get it sorted. I now can't push it back as its progressed. (yummy talk)

  • I had an open mesh op a good few years ago.
Painful to do anything other than lying down for a while but I'm not good with any type of pain ,It could have been as long as 2-3 weeks to be up and about and certainly didn't go near a bike for a while.

Don't rush back to cycling would be my advice.

  • Pensions, bloody hell. Turns out you do actually have to pay attention and make decisions about things decades before you thought. Doh.

  • Yes, I'm looking at mine wondering what life will be like in about 20 years and if 20pence a week will be sufficient.

  • I'm dutifully paying into one but I honestly assume it won't exist in 25 years time (I'm any meaningful way). I'm just paying in so someone else's can get theirs now.

  • Hernia recovery: don’t rush it!
My dad was impatient and screwed up his recovery so badly he needed another operation to repair the hernia again. Then got peritonitis.
    Third operation needed.
Wait as long as your doctor tells you, and then a bit more.

  • I had a keyhole hernia op in February inserting a 10x4 cm mesh.
Did nobody else have the stupendously swollen scrotum?

  • Thanks all. Will be taking it easy and hoping to avoid ^.

  • You do?

I went from not having one a few years ago to having 4 of them now.

  • My d*ck looked like I was into particularly brutal genital torture.

  • It's probably a particular issue with the NHS scheme which has now had 3 reforms since 2008 and that the generous nature of the OG scheme (% of final salary yo!) now apparently can cause tax issues on retirement if you have been in it a very long time. Which tends to be what generally happens to NHS staff.

I thought it was only an issue for senior consultants/very senior managers >£100k but turns out the Chancellor has come for middle management too.

    To the golf club thread!

  • FFS. Went to bed early last night, didn't have a drink, nothing strenuous yesterday. Woke up this morning with the worst pain in my spine just below neck/above shoulder blade area. If I drop my shoulders at all it's agony. Turning my head on the bike this morning was also shit.

    Fuck you, 40's.

  • I've had nights like that for as long as I can remember so it's not a middle-age thing. Some times I couldn't turn my head in one direction, like fucking Zoolander dude. :D

  • I am literally in the waiting area for a physio to look at this issue for me #46

  • Also driving to Catford later to pick up a second hand bandsaw, doing so with a fucked neck in a 14 year old C-Max is probably one of my top tier middle aged moments.

  • Had similar a couple of months ago. Long term wear and tear to rotator cuff, a couple of tight tendons, onset of arthritis and some weak muscles in my back combined into a perfect cluster fuck of pain doing innocuous actions like cutting bread or passing salt at the table but I could do some bits of gardening and heavy lifting. Osteopath, rest, ice, massage and some strengthening exercises have helped considerably.

  • Catford

    ooh la la

  • I fell asleep in an MRI scanner today.

  • Doesn't everyone do that?

  • If that was your MRI scanner, please proceed to the golf thread

  • Doesn't everyone have their own MRI scanner?
