Android phones, apps and tablets

  • The recent OnePlus update has finally sorted out everything I've hated about it's slight deviation from stock Android.

Mostly that it's fixed the Google Assistant bug and allows you to increase the home screen real estate to 6x5 icons.

    Which is nice.

  • You must like the standard launcher if you're not just using Nova... I think mine's set to 7x13.

  • Just cracked my pixel 6 screen. So annoyed. Was in my pocket while cycling.
    Boom, crack. What an arse.

  • Can't comprehend why anyone would want to scroll through apps..

  • Anyone using a Fairfone 4 care to comment on its durability, speed, reliability, quirks, etc? My Xcover is growing tired and I was looking at Pixel but more ethical choice of device seems up my alley. Any other suggestions that are IP-rated and not as big as these stupid 'phablets'?

  • I'm so averse to this shit now I didn't even think about looking on youtube for reviews. Too much noise, not enough cycling-specific content :)

    Ta

  • Also need to work out a way to turn on a Samsung XCover with broken power button and half dead USB. None of the funky key combos or adb will work.

  • Stop.

    Hammer time.

Looking to downsize my personal phone now that all the stuff which warranted being big has been migrated to a Galaxy Tab Active 3 for work and a 10" tablet for web browsing. Just did the gsmarena whittling down search for myself, looks like it's an Xcover 5 or nothing. Sony just announced Xperia 10 IV which is thinner, narrower and lighter and only 6mm taller, but it lacks the drop-proofness and it's double the price of the Samsung. I like my old Xperia, but probably not enough to pay that much when the Samsung UI is pretty inoffensive.

And, per your tweet and @skinny upthread, good luck trying to find anything properly small

  • My missus has the XCover 5 and I don't like it. Not sure she does either. It's not as big as all the other stuff but they've made the case slicker (god knows how many times she's dropped hers) and they've done dumb things to the button positions. They also got rid of the front hardware buttons which were great when using on the bike for GPS replacement or mid-race tweeting if that's your thing.

I used the Sony Z3 Compact and that was a great little phone, until the back came off it while mounted to my bars with a quadlock. All their newer phones have been a bit shit and I hate their Sony OS crap - I'd much prefer raw Android. It's not a deal breaker though, obvs, as I'm still using my Samsung XCover 4S with their stupid OS.

  • Re: smaller phones, we're not the only ones: https://smallandroidphone.com/

  • id say pixel 5

  • Re: smaller phones, we're not the only ones: https://smallandroidphone.com/

Am pleased to see the Pixel 6a drop and it appears to have a bigger screen but is roughly the same size as my current 3a. IP67 which apparently means..

"dust resistant" and can be "immersed in 1 meter of freshwater for up to 30 minutes".

    3a - 5.6 inch screen
    151.3 x 70.1 x 8.2 mm, weight 147g.

    6a - 6.1-inch screen
    152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9 mm, weight 178g.

  • I wouldn't normally buy an older phone.

I'm torn between the Fairphone 4 (bloody hippies) and the Pixel 6a. I love all the ethical shit of the Fairphone but it's massive and heavy compared to the Pixel 6a.

Nothing much that interests me smaller than these with decent IP-rating, dual-sim, big battery, etc

EDIT: That's pretty funny timing. Me responding to skinny 7 days later at exactly the same time you reply @spinnout :)

  • The 6a is only 6mm taller than my XCover 4S and not as wide (and I usually have that in a case so the XCover is obvs bigger with a case). So the 6a is looking pretty tempting to replace my broken XCover 4S.

But that bloody Fairphone keeps popping up... "think of the workers, ethically sourced minerals, repairable, 5 years of updates..."

  • Not sure if a better thread to ask in? I need cheap but functional earbuds for Android & iPhone SE use. These at John Lewis look like a possible option, anything else I should consider?

  • +1 i'm a fan of smaller phones and it works perfectly for me.

  • I'd have a look at whatever anker ones fit your budget.

At last, some decent small & weather resistent choices.
